About Mob Strong Debt Help
Since 2016, Financial Rights has been proudly operating Mob Strong Debt Help (“Mob Strong”). Mob Strong is a free nationwide legal advice and financial counselling program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We specialise in helping individuals manage debts from consumer loans (such as credit cards, pay day loans and car loans), banking, debt recovery and insurance (including car, home, travel, life and funeral) in a culturally safe manner. Our advocacy work aims to reform laws, systems and practices to promote financial well-being within the community.
About Financial Rights Legal Centre
Financial Rights Legal Centre (Financial Rights) is a community based legal centre in Surry Hills specialising in financial services, particularly credit, banking, insurance and debt.
The role
We are seeking to employ an enthusiastic Senior Solicitor and Policy Advocate for a full-time 18-month fixed term contract. Commitment to consumer rights and cultural safety essential. The position includes overseeing the daily operations of a small team of Financial Counsellors giving advice and representation assistance to the Mob Strong Debt Help line and Youpla line. The role also includes providing legal services for clients through legal advice, legal tasks and representation.

We seek someone who:
- Is a proven leader who can motivate and engage their team
- Possesses exceptional communication and interpersonal skills building effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Has a passion for social justice, aptitude for advocacy and awareness of the social context of clients
- An ability to learn and apply the law and legal processes in relation to credit, banking, insurance, and debt collection, particularly as it affects disadvantaged consumers and/or is of public interest
- Holds an unrestricted NSW Practising Certificate or is eligible to hold an unrestricted NSW Practising Certificate; and
- Works in a culturally safe manner
- Has experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander consumers and communities
- Is passionate about improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
- Demonstrated ability to provide non-judgemental, quality service delivery to vulnerable clients
- Available to travel, to go out to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to help out through outreach
