Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) is the nation’s leading voice on exercise and sports science. We govern and represent approximately 10,000 degree-qualified accredited exercise professionals who support Australians to reach their health and performance goals.

About your role:

You will work with the Communications Manager and all ESSA business units to coordinate and deliver communications, media and PR activities for the ESSA and Exercise Right brands in line with the communications and content plans.

Your key stakeholders are business leaders, other ESSA employees, sponsors, partners, advertisers, suppliers, grant bodies and ESSA Members.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Coordinate and implement communication activities that support ESSA’s projects, programs and advocacy priorities.
  • Work closely with the Policy and Advocacy team to ensure communication outputs accurately reflect ESSA’s policy positions and priorities.
  • Assist in preparing communication materials for advocacy campaigns, consultations, events and stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Draft engaging content for digital channels (website, social media, newsletters, eDMs) and stakeholder communications (media releases, briefs, reports, updates).
  • Translate complex policy or technical information into clear, accessible language for members, stakeholders and the public.
  • Assist in reviewing and editing submissions, reports, statements, presentations and media materials.
  • Work with your manager to prepare key messages, talking points and simple briefing materials for senior staff, ensuring consistency with ESSA’s voice and organisational priorities.
  • Support monitoring of social media channels and respond appropriately to member and stakeholder engagement.
  • Assist with internal communications activities as required.
  • Monitor public messaging, media coverage and stakeholder discussions related to ESSA’s policy work and escalate relevant insights to the Policy team.
  • Support media activity by preparing draft media releases, statements and reactive commentary for review.
  • Coordinate media enquiries, interview requests and background information in collaboration with the Policy and Advocacy team and your manager.
  • Monitor media mentions and share relevant coverage with internal teams.
  • Maintain and update media and stakeholder contact lists.
  • Assist in identifying proactive media opportunities on key topics relevant to ESSA audiences.

Your competitive edge will include:

  • Tertiary qualification in communications, public relations, journalism or a related field.
  • 3–5 years’ experience in communications, media, public affairs or a similar role.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to simplify complex information.
  • Experience supporting communications or media activities, preferably within policy, advocacy, government relations or public-facing contexts.
  • Strong organisational and project coordination skills, with attention to detail.
  • Experience producing content for digital channels and stakeholder communications.
  • Ability to work effectively with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
