The Portfolio Manager helps shape and improve our motor insurance portfolio. They work closely with our actuaries to keep an eye on performance, making sure our underwriting, pricing, and product mix stay on track. The role also plays a big part in developing new products and improving the ones we already have making sure they meet what our core customers actually want and help us stand out from competitors. Overall, this role turns insights into practical actions that support better decisions, steady growth, and great outcomes for our customers.

As a Portfolio Manager, you’ll:

  • Work closely with our actuaries to keep an eye on performance, making sure our underwriting, pricing, and product mix stay on track.
  • Drive targeted changes to product, pricing, and underwriting to lift profitability and customer outcomes.
  • Lead product development, improving existing products and launching new offerings driven by customer insight and market opportunities such as electric vehicles and boats. Ensure strong governance across PDS, TMD, and FSG.
  • Manage agent underwriting authority, including referrals outside the team’s delegated limits. Overseeing end-to-end workflow, enforcing underwriting standards, and coaching the Agent Support Team to build capability and lift performance.
  • Partner cross-functionally with claims, underwriting, and product teams to identify emerging risks, market shifts, and opportunities to optimise the portfolio.
  • Support the delivery of clear, actionable reporting to senior management, highlighting risks, opportunities, and variances to expected performance by translating actuarial analysis, marketing roadmap and other inputs etc.
  • Support pricing and product strategy, ensuring initiatives align with commercial objectives, regulatory obligations, and market conditions.
  • Proactively identify portfolio risks, recommending mitigation strategies that protect profitability and the customer experience.
  • Influence commercial decision-making through collaboration, balancing sustainable growth, risk discipline, and customer outcomes.
  • Lead underwriting and product governance, ensuring consistent, compliant, and well-understood guidelines, policy documents, question sets and product frameworks across the organisation.

About the successful candidate:

  • Strong experience, 7+ years, in insurance portfolio management, underwriting analysis, pricing, product development or actuarial analytics, ideally within general or motor insurance.
  • Proven ability to analyse technical performance, interpret complex data, and provide strategic recommendations.
  • Deep understanding of product mix, loss ratios, claims trends, and underwriting guidelines.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, influencing, and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
  • Commercial acumen with the ability to balance profitability, risk, and customer outcomes.
  • Experience in monitoring and reporting portfolio performance, with an ability to translate insights into actionable recommendations.
