About the Opportunity

DVNQ is seeking a compassionate and skilled practitioner who places children’s safety, wellbeing and voices at the centre of their practice. We are seeking an experienced Child and Family Practitioner to join our team on a temporary full-time contract until 30 June 2027. This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity to contribute to meaningful, strengths-based work with children, young people and families impacted by domestic and family violence.

The role sits within the Acknowledgement and Recognition of Domestic Violence and Real Change (AARDVARC) program and involves delivering trauma-informed case coordination and evidence-based therapeutic counselling in a child-centred, culturally safe way.

About Us

DVNQ is a Townsville-based charity with over 30 years’ experience supporting victim-survivors through evidence-based, trauma-informed practice. We are guided by our values of Integrity, Compassion, Advocacy, Innovation and Collaboration, and we invest in our people through supervision, training and a strong, supportive workplace culture.

DVNQ is committed to being a Child Safe Organisation. We have zero tolerance for child abuse and actively promote the safety, wellbeing and participation of all children.

About the Role

As a Child and Family Practitioner, you will support children, young people and their safe parent/caregiver who have experienced trauma as a result of domestic and family violence. Working within a therapeutic framework, you will provide case management, counselling and coordinated support while collaborating closely with internal teams and external service providers to achieve positive, sustainable outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake assessments, including comprehensive Risk and Needs Assessments
  • Develop and implement tailored, child-centred support plans
  • Provide evidence-based therapeutic support to children and their safe parent/caregiver
  • Deliver trauma-informed case coordination and targeted interventions
  • Engage families and facilitate referrals to relevant services
  • Maintain accurate case notes and reports in line with legislative and organisational requirements
  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, supervision and reflective practice

What We’re Looking For

You’ll bring both clinical depth and professional confidence to your work with children and families, including:

  • Strong expertise in trauma-informed, contemporary practice, with well-developed counselling, advocacy and case management skills.
  • A clear understanding of how domestic and family violence impacts children, including power, control and coercive dynamics.
  • Confidence supporting children who may present with behavioural or emotional challenges, helping caregivers make sense of trauma responses.
  • A child-centred approach that recognises children as victim-survivors in their own right, especially when risk increases.
  • Sound understanding of complex and intergenerational trauma, including impacts on First Nations peoples, and a commitment to culturally safe practice.
  • Strong professional judgement, with the ability to make complex decisions independently, balancing safety, best practice and available resources.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to explain sensitive or complex matters calmly and clearly, even during moments of heightened distress.
  • Experience providing supervision, mentoring or debriefing that supports ethical, accountable and high-quality practice.
  • Attention to detail and pride in producing high-quality written work, including reports and practice resources.
  • Confidence using technology and case management systems, including the Microsoft Office suite and relevant databases.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling or a related human services discipline (or a minimum of five years’ experience in a similar field may be considered)
  • At least three years’ full-time equivalent professional experience providing counselling to adults and/or children

Why Join DVNQ?
