Circle Green Community Legal (Circle Green) is a community legal centre providing humanitarian, tenancy, workplace, and family and domestic violence legal advice, further assistance, representation, advocacy, community legal education, referrals, outreach, and support.

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Financial Counsellor provides high‑quality financial counselling to eligible private rental tenants experiencing or at risk of financial hardship. Their work involves assessing client’s financial situations and offering both immediate and long‑term strategies, including information, advice, and practical support to improve financial outcomes, literacy, and wellbeing.
They work within the Tenancy team alongside lawyers and other support staff to deliver coordinated, trauma‑informed, client‑centred services. A strong commitment to supporting vulnerable clients and delivering high‑quality assistance is essential for the role.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Client services
- Deliver financial counselling effectively through both phone and in‑person appointments.
- Conduct assessments of clients’ financial circumstances and provide either discrete or ongoing support as required.
- Work collaboratively with clients to understand their financial situation and offer information, advice, and practical strategies to reduce financial hardship.
- Identify additional legal or non‑legal issues where appropriate, and facilitate referrals to relevant legal, community, or support services.
- Provide advocacy as needed and support clients to build financial knowledge, skills, and long‑term resilience.
Stakeholder engagement
- Contribute to the development of community education initiatives that promote awareness of financial resilience and related issues.
- Represent Circle Green as required, building and maintaining strong partnerships, networks, and industry connections.
Administration
- Prepare internal and external reports as required.
- Maintain accurate client data and detailed records of assistance provided in relevant databases.
- Complete additional administrative tasks as needed.
Team Responsibilities
- Implement Circle Green’s policies and procedures and act in alignment with the organisation’s mission and values.
- Participate in team meetings, planning activities, and review processes.
- Carry out other duties consistent with the role, as directed by the Principal Lawyer.
ABOUT YOU!
Skills and Attributes
- Demonstrated experience working within a financial counselling framework and delivering best‑practice services.
- Ability to identify how legal, financial, and other non‑legal issues interact.
- Understanding of the social challenges faced by financially disadvantaged individuals and families.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts to diverse audiences.
- Effective time‑management skills, with the ability to handle a high and varied workload.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
Experience
- Demonstrated experience in financial counselling.
- Experience supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged people.
- Strong commitment to social justice and human rights principles.
Credentials
- Diploma of Financial Counselling (or equivalent qualification).
- Member, or eligible for membership, of the Financial Counsellors’ Association of Western Australia.
