About the role

Reporting to the Assistant Flight Operations Manager, the Airborne Sensor Operator is responsible for the preparation, operation, and monitoring of airborne sensor systems during aerial survey missions. The role includes in-flight data quality monitoring, post-flight reporting, and support of production activities as required. This role supports both airborne LiDAR and digital photography operations, depending on operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight operation of airborne sensor systems
  • Evaluation of sun angles, tidal conditions and weather forecasts for survey projects
  • Communicate survey and operational requirements to the pilot in support of mission planning
  • Participate in pre-flight and post-flight safety checks
  • Assist with equipment installation, calibration, testing and removal
  • Operation of airborne sensor systems including LiDAR, digital imagery and ancillary systems
  • Monitor in-flight data quality, trajectories and overall flight performance
  • Recording, upload and submission of flight logs, daily reports and mission documentation
  • Quality control of sensor data and trajectories
  • Dispatch field data in a timely manner
  • Assist with routine maintenance and troubleshooting of sensors and associated equipment
  • Coordinate accommodation and transport logistics for field operations
  • Perform production-related tasks as requested by the Production Manager (secondary capacity)
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the Flight Operations Manager

About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A strong interest in aviation, aerial survey operations and travel
  • The ability to work away from home on a 16 days on / 12 days off roster
  • The ability to operate as a critical and dependable member of a small operational team
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively
  • Sound problem-solving skills with the ability to assess issues and implement practical solutions in the field
  • Strong time-management skills and the ability to multitask in dynamic and remote environments
  • The ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions and maintain contingency plans
  • Previous experience in airborne sensor operations, flight planning or geospatial data is desirable but not essential
