Description

Leading the day-to-day software improvements and landscape at a fast-paced and leading adventure retailer.

Are you a technically grounded hands-on engineering leader who thrives on building high-performing teams and delivering real business impact through technology through measurable outcomes? At 4WD Supacentre, we don’t just keep up with change — we drive it. As Head of IT Delivery, you’ll take the reins of our growing engineer technology team, steering the delivery of custom-built software solutions that power our over 40  retail stores and 5 distribution centres — every single day. You’ll balance hands-on technical leadership with people management, owning our engineering culture, our delivery cadence, and our roadmap execution across web, backend and integration platforms. If you’re ready to lead from the front in a fast-growing Australian adventure retailer, this is your opportunity to make a lasting impact. Join us at our Sydney Olympic Park Office, NSW.

This role calls for a seasoned engineering leader — someone who has spent the last 5+ years managing and growing software development teams with in-depth exposure to AI, brings genuine hands-on technical depth, and knows how to get the best out of small, tight-knit teams without layers of bureaucracy. This is a hands-on role sitting within a tight-knit team of around 15 talented technology specialists. Given the calibre we’re seeking, only candidates who closely meet or exceed these requirements will be contacted.

About the Role You will be the day-to-day leader of our agile technology team (including developers, testers, and integration engineers). While the CIO sets the strategic direction, you will make sure things actually get built, improved, and delivered. As hurdles and blockers occur, you will use your problem solving and deep skillset to unblock to ensure delivery

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and hands-on work alongside a team of developers, testers, and technical specialists
  • Own end-to-end delivery of multiple mini-projects, enhancements, and integration work streams
  • Ensure BAU incidents and operational issues are resolved quickly while still progressing project delivery
  • Drive agile delivery practices, sprint planning, prioritisation, and roadmap execution
  • Maintain high technical standards and hands-on involvement in architecture, code reviews, and complex problem-solving
  • Build and strengthen an engineering culture of ownership, quality, and pace
  • Work closely with business stakeholders to translate needs into deliverable solutions
  • Triage and resolve BAU requests, identifying root causes for recurring issues to reduce requests
  • Continuously improve our web, backend, integration, and internal systems landscape
  • Be accountable for business value delivery on a weekly basis
  • Work closely with the IT Infrastructure and Enterprise Architect

About you

You are a technically grounded leader who stays close to the work. You’ve rolled up your sleeves recently, you enjoy solving problems in the trenches, and you know how to get the best out of a small, high-performing team without unnecessary process or bureaucracy.

You’ll Bring:

  • 10+ years of experience in technology, with at least 5 years in a hands-on leadership / people management role (most recent)
  • Strong recent hands-on development experience (you are still very comfortable writing/reviewing code and troubleshooting issues)
  • Proven ability to deliver multiple concurrent projects and improvements in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience leading small-to-medium agile teams (10–20 people ideal)
  • Retail, e-commerce, supply chain, or warehouse systems experience (highly regarded)
  • Experience with AI Platforms and AI Tools and AI Savy
  • Excellent stakeholder management — able to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical people
  • A pragmatic, delivery-focused mindset with strong commercial awareness

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Retail or multi-site operational technology experience (POS, ERP, WMS, e-commerce)
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with modern development stacks (web, backend, APIs, integrations)
  • Strong knowledge of agile delivery practices and tools (Jira, Confluence, etc.)
  • Proven track record of building and improving engineering processes without adding bureaucracy
  • Australian working rights (no visa sponsorship)

Beneficial Skills and Qualifications (but not essential):

  • Exposure to AI/ML tools or automation initiatives
  • Experience with retail systems (POS, ERP, WMS, e-commerce platforms)
  • Cloud platforms (AWS and GCP), DevOps practices, CI/CD
  • Previous experience in multi-site retail or logistics environments
  • Previous experience with warehousing and distribution centres

What’s in it for you?

  • Competitive remuneration package
  • Exclusive employee discounts on the Adventure Kings product range
  • Onsite (Sydney Olympic Park) with a mix of hybrid-work available
  • Parking provided
  • Be part of a dynamic, rapidly evolving, fast-growing company

If you’re a strong technical leader who wants to own delivery, build a great team, and see your work used every day in a real business, we want to hear from you.

*Please note: Only applicants with full, unrestricted Australian working rights will be considered for this role. We are not offering visa sponsorship at this time. Recruitment agencies and third-party inquiries will not be accepted.
