are we, and why are we hiring?
4AI Systems is building
multi-sensor artificial intelligence perception and advisory systems for rail.
The system is designed to help improve rail vehicles performance through
harnessing sensor technology to alert to operational conditions in front of the
moving vehicle. The system is deployed in Australia and is continuing to
grow. As a result
of ongoing growth, we have a need for an experienced Senior DevOps
Engineer to help drive operational excellence, improve system reliability, and
accelerate delivery across our engineering teams. This role works closely with
Development, Test/QA, and Support to design, build, and operate secure,
scalable infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines that support high‑quality software
delivery.
You
will provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and play a key role in
strengthening automation, observability, and reliability practices across the
organisation.
The role is
a permanent position located in Warabrook, Newcastle NSW.
The
Role
The daily
activities of this role include:
·Design, build, and maintain scalable,
secure infrastructure across Linux and Windows environments.
·Manage containerised application
environments using Docker and related technologies.
·Provide technical leadership and
mentorship to engineering teams, promoting DevOps best practices.
·Design and optimise CI/CD pipelines
(GitHub Actions) to support efficient build, test, and deployment workflows.
·Collaborate with software engineers
(C++, Python, TypeScript) to streamline build and release processes.
·Implement monitoring, logging, and
alerting solutions to improve system observability and reliability.
·Support incident response, including
root cause analysis and continuous improvement actions.
·Contribute to security and compliance
initiatives, including alignment with ISO27001 where applicable.
The successful candidate will have:
·5 years or more software development
experience in large complex projects; and/or bachelor’s or master’s degree in
computer engineering, information technology or similar field.
·Software development experience using
C++ and JavaScript/TypeScript, with proficiency in scripting languages such as
Python.
·Demonstrated experience working with
SQL databases (e.g. SQLite, MySQL, MSSQL, Oracle, or similar).
·Solid knowledge of Unix‑style
operating systems, version control systems, and CMake.
·Hands-on experience with
containerisation tools and technologies, including Docker, Kubernetes, Talos,
or similar platforms.
·Strong analytical, problem‑solving,
and troubleshooting skills, particularly in identifying and resolving complex
software issues.
·Demonstrated ability to work
independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively within a
team environment.
·Well‑developed written and verbal
communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally and
effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders
Highly Regarded:
·Experience with ISO27001, including
supporting information security controls, audits, or continuous compliance
within DevOps environments.

negotiate the salary for the successful candidates according to experience.
This role
is only open to those who are permanent residents of Australia and preferably
from the greater Newcastle area, or those willing to relocate at their own
expense to Newcastle, NSW.
