About the Role
The Service Locator is responsible for identifying, locating, and marking underground utilities and assets to ensure safe excavation and construction activities. This role plays a critical part in preventing damage to essential infrastructure such as water, gas, electricity, telecommunications, and sewer services.
Using specialised locating equipment and interpreting utility plans and construction drawings, the Service Locator accurately determines the position of underground assets and marks them in accordance with industry standards and company policies and procedures. The role requires strong attention to detail, technical aptitude, and a commitment to workplace health and safety.
Service Locators work closely with the Specialised Services Manager, Site Supervisors, Project Managers, and asset owners to communicate findings, minimise risk, and support efficient project delivery. The position is primarily field-based and involves working outdoors in various site conditions while maintaining high standards of accuracy, professionalism, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, locate, mark and record underground services and utilities to project requirements
- Utilise a range of service locating equipment such as ground penetrating radar, electro-magnetic locators, transmitters and hand tools
- Carry out non-destructive vacuum excavation for the purpose of identifying and marking underground assets
- Reading and interpreting asset plans (BYDA), project construction drawings, aerial imagery, electronic and visual data
- Validate underground services via NDD excavation, hand excavation and potholing
- Prepare and distribute appropriate service reports and project completion documents
- Communicate effectively with site personnel regarding locating requirements, activities and findings
- Follow and adhere to company policies, procedures and work instructions
About You
- Proficiency in utilising underground locating equipment including NDD vacuum excavation equipment
- Ability to read and interpret asset plans and construction drawings
- Positive communication and problem-solving skills
- Strong work ethic
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in identifying and marking services
- Proactive and positive attitude toward safety and risk management
- Clear verbal and digital communication skills
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Intermediate skills in applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Nearmaps and service report software
- Strong organisation, planning and time management skills
- Previous and proven experience with locating underground services in a subdivision construction environment (highly desirable)
- Knowledge and experience with GPS Rover equipment for the purpose of service pickup’s, or willing to complete training (highly desirable)
Qualifications required:
• White Card / Construction Card
• RIICCM202E Identify, Locate and Protect Underground Services (or equivalent)
• Current and valid Manual C Class Driver’s Licence
• Certloc Certified Locator (highly regarded), or willing to obtain
