Zerella Fresh is one of Australia’s largest growers and packers of Carrots, Onions and Potatoes supplying Australia’s leading supermarket chains plus independents and exports.
We are currently seeking an experienced Carrot Farm Supervisor to join our team on a full-time permanent basis at our Parilla site, located in South Australia.
Reporting to the Farm Manager, this person will operate and control agricultural and horticultural spray equipment.
This is a hands-on role requiring involvement in all aspects of farm supervision, including but not limited to planning, cultivation, spraying, harvesting, and irrigation. The position follows a fortnightly roster, including on-call duties and assigned weekend work.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with and support the Production Manager, providing cover in their absence.
- Coordinate harvesting programs and daily operations in consultation with the Production Manager, ensuring efficiency, safety, quality standards, and adherence to production targets.
- Monitor crop readiness and harvesting conditions (e.g. soil moisture, weather, crop maturity) to optimise yield and minimise waste or damage.
- Supervise harvesting activities to ensure carrots are harvested, handled, and transported in line with quality specifications and food safety requirements.
- Identify and escalate any crop issues (e.g. pests, disease, defects, yield variation) that may impact harvesting outcomes.
- Support the effective management of all farm equipment, ensuring operators perform daily pre-start checks, basic care, and timely fault reporting.
- Assist in scheduling and coordinating preventative maintenance for harvesting equipment (e.g. harvesters, tractors, trailers) to minimise downtime.
- Perform basic mechanical troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance on harvesting and farm equipment as required.
- Monitor equipment performance during harvesting operations and take proactive action to address inefficiencies or breakdown risks.
- Oversee agreed work schedules for the farm team, ensuring tasks are completed in line with established procedures and timelines.
- Coordinate and supervise the work of farm workers and labourers, ensuring appropriate onboarding, training, and ongoing development.
- Assist with operational reporting and communication of harvesting progress, issues, and outcomes to the Farm Manager.
- Undertake all other duties as directed to support the achievement of business objectives.
- Work on a fortnightly roster that includes weekend duties and standby requirements during harvesting.
Qualifications
- Diploma in a relevant field plus at least 1 year of relevant experience or at least 3 years of relevant experience.
- Experience in a horticultural operations / farm management.
- Experience working with potato, carrot, and onion crops (desirable).
- Basic mechanical knowledge and experience working with large scale agricultural machinery.
- Unrestricted Class C Drivers Licence (essential).
- Chemical User Certificate Accreditation (desirable).
- Forklift license (desirable).
- HC license (desirable).
- Cultural adaptability and a willingness to work with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Ability and willingness to undertake manual, and sometimes physical work.
- Ability and willingness to work outdoors, in all kinds of weather conditions.
- A willingness to be hands on and participate in a broad range of duties, a strong work ethic is essential.
