The Living Room is seeking a part-time Client Support Worker to provide practical, person-centred support to people experiencing homelessness and severe disadvantage in Melbourne’s CBD. This role is all about brief, impactful interventions, linking people to health and community services and contributing to a safe, welcoming drop-in environment.

At The Living Room you’ll work in a fast-paced drop-in environment with complex presentations so a calm, consistent approach and strong boundaries are essential. You’ll collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team and use trauma-informed, person-centred practice to support safety, engagement and practical outcomes. Experience in homelessness, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD), mental health or community health settings and confidence working within a harm reduction framework will be highly regarded. This is an active frontline role so you’ll be expected to respond to presentations as they arise, use sound judgement to manage safety and de-escalation and complete clear documentation and handovers.

People with lived experience of homelessness, AOD use and/or mental health challenges are encouraged to apply.

Minimum requirements

  • Certificate IV in Community Services, AOD, Mental Health or similar (or equivalent demonstrated experience)
  • Direct service experience supporting people with multiple and complex needs
  • Knowledge of homelessness, housing and health service systems

A bit about us

The Living Room is a primary health service. The team works with people aged 18+ to provide free healthcare and support to improve the physical, mental, and social well-being of individuals who are experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness.

The only service of its kind in Melbourne, it focuses on the social determinants of health to look beyond disease or illness to see a person’s overall situation. Our multidisciplinary team works with individuals to identify goals and focus on harm minimisation, self-determination, and empowerment.

Our non-judgemental service strongly focuses on respect, client-centred care and harm prevention. We work with clients on a personalised, tailored basis to address highly complex issues faced by people experiencing multiple and complex needs. Youth Projects is an independent, registered charity that provides front-line support to young people and individuals experiencing disadvantage, unemployment, homelessness, and alcohol and other drug issues.
