1-year fixed-term full-time contract (35 hours per week, with shifts rostered across five days per week Monday to Sunday between 6:30 am and 8:30 pm)

Salary is based on experience and is equivalent to the ACT Public Sector Nursing and Midwifery Enterprise Agreement

Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health & Community Services (Winnunga AHCS) is Canberra’s only Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service. Located in the heart of Canberra, we deliver trusted, holistic healthcare to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the ACT and surrounding regions. We are looking for an experienced Registered Nurse to join Winnunga’s AMC Clinic. The role of the AMC Nurse is to enhance the clinical services offered to the clients at Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health and Community Services, and the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC).

This exceptionally professional and committed staff member will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Provide clinical care including bloods and specimen collection, ECGs, assessment and management of wounds, suture removal and administration of medication.
  • Ability to negotiate complex social and health issues with clients.
  • Review all pathology results and collaborate with doctors on same.
  • Ability to identify situations where the input of other staff, such as a Doctor, Aboriginal Health Worker, Midwife Nurse, Psychiatrist or Psychologist is required
  • Vaccine storage management: Maintain the integrity of all immunisations. Understand cold chain management and maintain the cold chain, all Commonwealth Department of Health guidelines in respect to vaccine storage and management, adhere to the policies developed on vaccine storage and management, adhere to all policies and procedures in regards to vaccine storage and management. Ensure adequate supplies of vaccines are always present.

We are looking for exceptionally empathetic and resilient person who:

  • has full working rights in Australia
  • has a current professional clinical registration inclusive of a police background/ Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 or reciprocal conditions check.
  • demonstrates high level of oral and written communication skills including the ability to consult, collaborate, negotiate and interact effectively with individuals from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds.
  • demonstrates a strengths-based, client-centred approach
  • has over 3 years of work experience as a Registered Nurse
  • applies culturally safe practices and works respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and communities
  • can work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team of clinical and non-clinical staff
  • is committed to ongoing learning, culturally safe practices and teamwork
  • holds a current driver’s license
