Summary
We are seeking a reliable and community-minded Caretaker on a part-time basis (0.6 FTE) to support the upkeep and presentation of our school facilities and grounds. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, well organised, and committed to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Position Summary
Unity Grammar is seeking a reliable, proactive, and self-motivated Caretaker to join our school on a part-time basis (0.6 FTE). The role is responsible for the maintenance, cleanliness, security, and gardening of school facilities and grounds, ensuring a safe, functional, and well-presented environment for students, staff, and visitors. The successful applicant will be able to work independently, demonstrate strong organisational skills, and take pride in maintaining high standards across the school site.
Key Responsibilities
- Gardens & Grounds Maintenance
- The role will primarily involve:
- Lawn mowing and grass cutting
- Hedge trimming and pruning
- Edging, weeding, and general garden upkeep
- Ongoing maintenance of school gardens and green spaces
- Facilities & Maintenance
- Carry out general handyman duties and property maintenance
- Undertake minor repairs safely and efficiently
- Perform routine maintenance tasks including cleaning, painting, and equipment upkeep
- Identify, report, and assist with maintenance issues requiring external contractors
- Health, Safety & Security
- Ensure school facilities and grounds are safe and compliant with WHS requirements
- Monitor site security and report hazards, damage, or safety concerns
- Respond appropriately to maintenance-related and emergency situations
- Support a child-safe and secure school environment
- Operational Support
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance work and repairs
- Liaise with school leadership, staff, and external contractors
- Support school events and activities as required
- Additional duties may be required from time to time in line with the operational needs of the school.
Essential Criteria
- Demonstrated experience in general handyman duties, property maintenance, and minor repairs
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
- Strong organisational and communication skills
- High attention to detail and a proactive, safety-focused approach
- Physical capability to perform maintenance and gardening tasks
- Desirable Criteria
- Previous experience in a school or similar environment
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety practices
- Relevant trade, maintenance, or groundskeeping experience
- Must have a valid Working With Children’s Check Clearance
