The Opportunity:
We’re seeking a passionate sports lover to be our new Head of Sport Communications and lead our national Communications team across Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. Reporting into the Executive General Manager of Wildcard, this is a pivotal leadership role responsible for driving team development, client success and business growth across three key pillars: people management, client management, and financial & revenue management.
Based in either Melbourne or Adelaide, you’ll be leading a talented team that works with Australia’s major sporting bodies and key brands. You’ll amplify and tell their stories via PR, while building strong relationships across consumer and sports media landscapes.
What you’ll be doing:
- Lead and develop your team: Manage, mentor, and support the professional growth of Communications team members nationally. You’ll oversee resourcing, assist with recruitment, performance management, training and development, ensuring the right talent is matched to client needs
- Drive client success: Oversee key Communications clients, leading strategic planning and delivery to meet earned media objectives. You’ll provide high-level strategic counsel, respond to briefs and RFPs, and act as the escalation point for client challenges
- Manage financial performance: Oversee the financial health and commercial delivery of the Communications team, maintain Salesforce records, ensure fee structures align with TGI targets, and contribute to budgeting and P&L management
- Generate new business: Own the development and securing of new business relationships for Communications and WILDCARD. Identify targets, set up credentials meetings, develop and pitch strategic communications strategies to win new clients
- Foster collaboration: Encourage engagement across WILDCARD teams (film, creative, design) and broader TGI business units (Partnerships, Live Events, Creative). Create a creative, safe working environment that draws great ideas from others
- Ensure operational excellence: Manage overservicing and resourcing across your portfolio, lead team meetings, work with Legal on major contracts, and be instrumental in integrating the team across interstate offices
- Provide strategic leadership: Balance strategic thinking with execution, introduce new industry trends, see several steps ahead for clients, and motivate your team to achieve best practice autonomously

What we’re looking for:
- Extensive experience: You’re a seasoned Public Relations or Media Communications professional within the sports or lifestyle industries, with proven experience in a senior leadership role ready for the next challenge and to lead a team.
- Personal attributes: Must love sport! Dynamic, social, proactive, well-presented, confident, calm under pressure, detail-oriented, creative, strategic thinker with exceptional storytelling ability
- Established network: Elite national media network across print, TV, radio and online. Extensive connections within consumer media, sports media, and sports commercial landscapes. Sporting connections and relationships are required.
- Communications expertise: Extensive experience writing and developing communications strategies for brands and rights holders in sport. In-depth understanding of brand/consumer marketing, including influencers and content creators. Proficiency with social media platforms
- Leadership capability: Proven ability to lead, motivate and build teams. Experience managing performance reviews, professional development, and creating buy-in at all levels
- Strategic mindset: Ability to strategically unpack briefs, balance strategic thinking with execution and instill best-in-class client management skills in your team
- Stakeholder management: Mature and experienced in managing diverse internal and external stakeholders at senior levels. Diplomatic with the ability to have tactful, challenging conversations
- Commercial acumen: Track record of driving revenue, managing budgets, and achieving financial targets. Entrepreneurial approach to balancing client needs with business objectives
- Technical skills: Strong Microsoft Office skills, Figma (preferred), Salesforce (desirable), SharePoint knowledge, and impeccable attention to detail
- Education: Relevant tertiary qualifications in Sports Management, Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Business or equivalent (preferred)
