Overview of the Early Intervention Project
Starick recognises children and young people as primary victim survivors of FDV, and that growing up in families where violence and coercive control are used has impacts across a range of domains including social, emotional, health and physical development.
Starick’s Early Intervention Project is a partnership with Curtin School of Allied Health which seeks to address these impacts. The project provides early screening, assessment and therapeutic interventions undertaken by professionally supervised Curtin University students from the disciplines of occupational therapy, speech pathology and social work. The students are embedded in our services, and work in work in partnership with specialist FDV staff at Starick to deliver these early intervention services.
The Project has operated within Starick since 2021, and in 2026 will be upscaled to be delivered in two additional services – a centre-based FDV outreach service and an Aboriginal-specific service. The upscale will provide an opportunity to test the applicability of the service model to different FDV service types and to make any necessary refinements to the model, with a view to further upscaling. An evaluation and a Return on Investment study are therefore key components of the Project and will be undertaken by Curtin University.
