ABOUT THE ROLE

The Senior Accountant is to oversee and manage the institution’s financial operations, ensuring sound financial planning, compliance with regulatory requirements, accurate reporting, and effective budget management. The role supports the college’s strategic objectives by providing financial insight and stewardship, safeguarding assets, and promoting fiscal responsibility to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of the institution.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Operations and Reporting

  • Oversee all financial operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and banking.
  • Ensure the preparation of accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Monitor cash flow, working capital, and financial health of the institution.
  • Manage financial reconciliations and end-of-month reporting processes.

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, accounting standards, tax regulations, and audit requirements.
  • Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard college assets and ensure accurate financial data.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors and coordinate audit activities.
  • Monitor financial risks and recommend mitigation strategies to leadership.

Budget Management and Control

  • Lead the development, coordination, and monitoring of the college’s annual budget.
  • Ensure budget compliance and oversee budget performance tracking.
  • Provide variance analysis and commentary to support operational decision-making.
  • Work with department heads to support financial planning and accountability.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Lead and manage the finance team to ensure high performance and accountability.
  • Set clear objectives, conduct performance reviews, and support staff development.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional excellence.
  • Oversee workload distribution, training, and support within the team.

Systems and Process Improvement

  • Oversee the financial systems, ensuring they are efficient, secure, and meet the college’s needs.
  • Drive improvements in financial processes, procedures, and systems to increase efficiency and accuracy.
  • Ensure data integrity and security in financial operations.
  • Evaluate and implement new financial tools and technologies where appropriate.

Stakeholder Engagement and Communication

  • Present financial information and insights clearly to internal and external stakeholders, including non-financial staff.
  • Liaise with government agencies, funders, and other external bodies on financial matters.
  • Support fundraising, grant reporting, and funding compliance requirements as needed.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • Full professional accounting qualification (CPA, CA, ACCA or equivalent)
  • Minimum 6–10 years of progressive experience in accounting roles
  • Demonstrated experience managing budgets, audits, and compliance within complex organisations
  • Proven experience leading finance teams and implementing financial controls and systems
  • Experience in the education sector or similar not-for-profit/public sector environment (desirable)
  • Postgraduate qualifications in finance or management (desirable) 

Knowledge & Skills

  • In-depth understanding of financial management principles, accounting standards (AASB, IFRS), and audit processes.
  • Strong strategic thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent leadership, team management, and interpersonal skills.
  • High-level proficiency in financial software and systems (e.g., ERP systems, Excel, reporting tools).
  • Clear communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of the education sector and public sector financial frameworks (preferred).
