Empower Your Career with Us
Are you ready to join a dynamic team delivering meaningful outcomes in a large-scale, high-impact infrastructure programme?
We are seeking a Senior VMware Automation Engineer (VCF) to support a major virtual infrastructure and automation uplift for a large, complex enterprise environment in Sydney. This is a hands-on contract role suited to someone who can work across VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), automation, operational process improvement, lifecycle management, and platform engineering in a structured environment.
You will play a key role in improving the automation, consistency, and maintainability of virtual machine provisioning and deprovisioning workflows, while helping uplift governance and operational reliability across a broader VCF-aligned platform environment.
Position Overview
This role is focused on modernising and improving VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and VMware-based infrastructure automation across blueprint design, image lifecycle management, validation workflows, IP lifecycle controls, and VM disposal processes.
You will work closely with platform engineers, infrastructure teams, and operational stakeholders to deliver practical automation outcomes that reduce manual effort, improve platform hygiene, and support a more reliable end-to-end virtual machine lifecycle across a complex enterprise platform.
This is a delivery-focused role for someone who is comfortable being hands-on with both technical implementation and process uplift, and who understands how automation fits into a broader VCF operational model.
Key Responsibilities
- Rework VM blueprints to improve maintainability and reduce hardcoded configuration within a VMware / VCF environment.
- Implement dynamic or self-maintaining resource field validation for items such as deployment clusters, VLANs, and other infrastructure inputs.
- Centralise static input values such as locations, environments, and classification tags using reusable platform configuration patterns.
- Support and enhance automation capabilities aligned to VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) platform operations and lifecycle requirements.
- Establish and improve IP lifecycle management processes to reduce IP conflicts, improve configuration accuracy, and align platform workflows with authoritative allocation sources.
- Automate golden image patching and template maintenance to ensure base images remain current and support operational standards.
- Enhance baseline templates by incorporating standardised and critical applications where required.
- Support optimisation of SQL image templates and related best-practice VM configuration.
- Build reusable pre-build validation checks for platform and environment readiness.
- Automate VM deprovisioning workflows, including graceful unenrolment and removal of management configurations prior to deletion.
- Automate enrolment and unenrolment of key platform services such as monitoring, security, backup, and disaster recovery tooling.
- Contribute to operational uplift and continuous improvement across VMware and VCF-based infrastructure services.
- Produce clear technical documentation, implementation notes, and operational runbooks.
- Work closely with engineering and operations stakeholders to ensure automation aligns with platform governance and operational requirements.
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in VMware platform engineering and automation within large enterprise or government environments.
- Strong hands-on experience with VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), including familiarity with VCF architecture, platform operations, and lifecycle management concepts.
- Strong hands-on experience with VMware Aria Automation / vRealize Automation, Aria Orchestrator / vRO, or similar VMware automation tooling.
- Experience working with VM blueprints, provisioning workflows, reusable configuration patterns, and lifecycle automation.
- Solid knowledge of vSphere, virtual infrastructure operations, and enterprise VM management practices.
- Experience improving or automating golden image and template lifecycle processes.
- Familiarity with IP lifecycle management, CMDB/IPAM-aligned workflows, or related infrastructure process controls.
- Experience building validation workflows, deprovisioning logic, and Day 0–2 automation patterns.
- Strong understanding of operational governance, change control, and platform reliability practices.
- Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders in a structured environment.
- Strong documentation and communication skills.
Nice to Have
- Experience with VCF deployments, workload domains, cluster provisioning, or VCF lifecycle operations.
- Experience with SolarWinds IPAM or similar IP address management tooling.
- Experience in regulated, government, or other highly controlled enterprise environments.
- Scripting capability with PowerCLI, PowerShell, or related automation tooling.
- Experience working onsite with infrastructure or operations teams in delivery-intensive environments.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to work on a significant platform and automation programme with long-term runway.
- A high-impact role where you can shape practical engineering outcomes in a complex environment.
- A collaborative team of senior technologists focused on delivery excellence.
- Competitive contract rates.
- The chance to contribute to platform modernisation, automation uplift, and operational resilience in a mission-critical setting.
If you are a hands-on VMware automation engineer with VCF experience and enjoy solving real infrastructure problems and delivering meaningful outcomes, we would love to hear from you.
