Role Overview:  

As our new Engineering Manager, you’ll lead a high performing team to design, develop, enhance, and maintain the Smokeball product suite. This is a hands-on leadership role where you’ll combine technical excellence, strong system architecture capability, and people-first leadership to deliver products that delight our clients across Australia, the US, and the UK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and mentor a team of Engineers (including Team Leads and Senior Engineers), supporting their technical and professional development.
  • Oversee and guide software design, architecture, and development practices, ensuring the deliveryof high-quality, scalable, maintainable solutions. Make key architectural decisions for complex systems, collaborating with Product, QA, and other cross-functional teams.
  • Plan, delegate, and manage engineering projects end-to-end.
  • Drive improvements across the SDLC, including
  • CI/CD, testing strategies, automation, and process optimisation.
  • Provide technical leadership, act as an escalation point for complex issues, and champion engineering best practices.
  • Review code to ensure quality, performance, and alignment with Smokeball standards.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, performance reviews, and team culture initiatives.

About You  

  • Experienced engineering leader who loves building impactful products and strong teams.
  • Strong technical background with deep expertise in modern software development (e.g., C#, .NET, JavaScript/TypeScript, AWS serverless architecture). Architectural capability, able to design scalable, maintainable, high performing systems.
  • Exceptional communication skills, able to collaborate confidently with engineers, product managers, QA, and non‑technical teams.
  • 12+ years in software development with 6+ years in people leadership.
  • A passion for coaching and developing engineers.
  • An adaptive, solutions focused mindset, you’re comfortable navigating ambiguity and change.
  • A team first approach: you enjoy building culture, aligning people, and having a good laugh along the way.
