The Role 

SHQ2U is an outreach cervical screening pilot program for people with disability, funded by the Western Australian Cervical Cancer Prevention Program (WACCP). The SHQ2U nurse will provide accessible and inclusive cervical screening for people with disability in community-based settings, in line with the National Cervical Screening Guidelines.  

The role also involves supporting the project clinical lead in the preparation and delivery of statewide education sessions for health professionals, people with disability and, if applicable, their carers.  

Your Skills, Knowledge, Abilities and Experience 

  • Review requests for cervical screening according to eligibility and exclusion criteria and organise outreach appointments in line with SHQ 2U Policy 

  • Carry out administration duties including bookings, risk assessments and follow up of results 

  • Ensure ethical, responsible and reliable data management utilising REDCap and Zedmed software systems. 

  • Conduct outreach visits to provide cervical screening procedures in accordance with current clinical standards and national cervical screening guidelines. 

  • Provide clear information and support to patients, addressing questions and concerns with sensitivity and respect. 

  • Uphold client dignity, privacy and confidentiality at all times. 

  • Adapt care approaches to meet the needs of clients with disability and other additional support requirements 

  • Promote cervical screening and offer education to clients, carers and support workers as required 

  • Adhere to infection control prevention and control measures during all clinical activities 

  • Recognise clients requiring additional care and make appropriate referrals 

  • Participate in relevant training and maintain up-to-date knowledge of cervical screening practices and accessibility standards 

  • Work collaboratively with other members of the team and external service providers to deliver coordinated care 

  • Ensure adherence to procedures and through preparation for outreach visits to maintain timeliness, reliability, safety and efficiency 

  • Report and debrief of any incidents, contribute to quality improvement and participate in audit activities within the service.

  • Contribute to the planning and statewide delivery of accessible and inclusive awareness education for health professionals, people with disability and where applicable, their carers about SHQ2U and cervical screening. This may require statewide travel.  

Your qualifications and/or other requirements 

Essential: 

  • AHPRA Registered Nurse with minimum 3 years of clinical experience 

  • Completion of SHQ Cervical Screening Certificate (or equivalent) 

  • A minimum of 12 months recent experience (within the last two years) in cervical screening including client history taking, specimen collection and follow up of results  

  • Excellent understanding of Australian cervical screening guidelines 

  • Demonstrated experience in working with people with disability in a health care context 

  • Demonstrated commitment to delivering person-centred care in line with the National Standards for Disability Services, ensuring that the rights, preferences, communication needs, and individual circumstances of each client with disability are respected and prioritised in all aspects of service delivery. 

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and rapport with people with disability, carers, and support networks 

  • Excellent administration skills including familiarity with clinic IT systems and data entry 

  • Ability to work independently with good problem-solving skills, critical thinking and adaptability to meet individual needs of each client 

  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team 

  • Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development 

  • Western Australian Drivers Licence (C class or C-A class) 

  • A National Police Clearance no older than 6 months from date of issue. 

  • Current Working with Children check.

  • Current certificate of immunisation and or evidence of immunity for (Hepatitis B, Influenza, Pertussis, Measles Mumps and Rubella, Varicella). 

  • Current unrestricted Australian drivers’ licence. 

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required. 

  • Willingness to travel within Western Australia as required. 

  • A current CPR certificate·

Desirable

  • Previous experience in women’s health, sexual health or community nursing

  • Training in health promotion and education.

  • Experience in delivering education, including public speaking and formal presentations.

  • Experience using easy read, plain language, or visual communication to support informed consent and client understanding in a health care setting
