Redfern Legal Centre is a non-profit community legal centre that promotes social justice and creates change.  We provide free legal advice, legal services and education to people experiencing disadvantage in New South Wales.  We drive innovation and change through policy and law reform work to address inequalities in the legal system, policies and social practices that cause disadvantage. 

 

We provide effective and integrated free legal services that are client-focused, collaborative, non-discriminatory and responsive to changing community needs – to our local community as well as state-wide.  Our specialist legal services focus on tenancy, credit, debt and consumer law, financial abuse, employment law, international students, First Nations justice, police accountability, and provide outreach services, including through our health justice partnership.   

Position Overview 

The Senior Solicitor leads a small team, including a solicitor and intake officer, to provide high quality legal advice and casework to patients of the Sydney Local Area Health District (SLHD). Outreach services are delivered across multiple SLHD sites, including RPA Hospital, Sydney Dental Hospital, the Professor Marie Bashir Centre and Redlink Waterloo Social Housing.  

 

The practice provides legal services in a broad range of civil matters with a focus on care and protection, domestic and family violence, tenancy, credit and debt, family law (including parenting matters, preliminary property advice, separation and divorce) and victims support/compensation. There are also criminal matters involving diversion because of mental health or cognitive impairment. The practice has a strong focus on supporting people with mental health conditions and First Nations community members. 

 

The role involves a significant amount of stakeholder engagement to increase the capacity of SLHD staff to identify and refer clients experiencing disadvantage. 

Position Responsibilities 

  • Establish and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders, including health partners, community organisations and the legal assistance sector. 

  • Provide high-quality legal advice, advocacy and ongoing casework in a range of areas of law including care and protection, domestic and family violence, tenancy, parenting, credit & debt, victims compensation and minor criminal matters, including the preparation of applications and appearances in courts and tribunals. 

  • Supervise the Health Justice Partnership solicitor and the intake officer liaising with clients and referrers to arrange appointments and support the practice. 

  • Prepare and deliver community legal education to stakeholders. 

  • Prepare publications such as fact sheets to assist clients to understand their rights. 

  • Identify opportunities to expand and improve referral systems based on community needs. 

  • Contribute to policy and law reform work through casework insights and systemic issue identification. 

  • Contribute to Redfern Legal Centre through attendance at staff meetings, contribution to board and funding reports, assistance with intake including intake supervision shifts, and contribution to the effective implementation of our Reconciliation Action Plan. 

 Knowledge, skills and experience 

 

Essential 

  1. Excellent ability to build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders, including health partners and community organisations. 
  2. Qualified to practice as a solicitor in NSW, holds or is eligible to hold a current practicing certificate and at least 4 years of post-admission experience in relevant areas of law. 
  3. Proven ability to provide high quality legal advice and casework to clients experiencing social and economic disadvantage in a range of relevant areas of law. 
  4. Capacity to supervise and mentor junior staff providing legal and intake services. 
  5. Demonstrated understanding of trauma informed, culturally safe and client centred practice.  
  6. Commitment to the objectives of Community Legal Centres and social justice. 
  7. Vaccination against the following diseases in accordance with SLHD Policy PD2024_015: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, varicella (chicken pox), tuberculosis, COVID-19 and flu, or an undertaking to be vaccinated against those diseases within a reasonable period of time.
  8. Provision of a criminal record check. 

Desirable 

  1. Experience working in a health setting or health justice partnership. 
  2. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver community legal education and contribute to law reform. 

Conditions  

Salary and benefits: $122, 043.91 – $138,308.60 (pro rata for part-time), depending on qualifications and experience.  

 

Superannuation and annual leave loading are paid in addition to this and salary packaging is available. 

 

Redfern Legal Centre offers a 35-hour working week, time in lieu options, a paid end of year closure of two weeks (including public holidays) on top of four weeks annual leave, and a generous staff training budget.
