NQ Dry Tropics is seeking an experienced Senior Project Officer specialising in technical monitoring to join our Living Landscapes program.
The successful applicant will be a technically-strong monitoring professional who cares deeply about data integrity, defensible methods and getting the details right. They will be passionate about working on projects where robust monitoring and evaluation are central to success, not an afterthought.
They will provide technical expertise in monitoring, evaluation and data management within the Living Landscapes program. This role is particularly focused on supporting major wetland and water quality initiatives, including Reef-focused projects where the credibility of outcomes depends on the quality, consistency and traceability of monitoring data.
They will work closely with NRM Project Managers who rely on technical expertise to prepare monitoring and evaluation inputs for reporting. They will also be supported by NQ Dry Tropics’ Senior MERI Officer, ensuring methodological alignment and providing additional assurance. While this position does not hold formal reporting accountability, it plays a critical role in ensuring that monitoring and evaluation data is accurate, defensible and reporting-ready.
This is a permanent full-time position based in Townsville, supported by secure, multi-year funding through to 2030, providing strong role stability and opportunities for longer-term professional development.
The skills and attributes we are looking for include:
a strong commitment to robust monitoring, evaluation and data integrity, with a high level of attention to detail;
demonstrated experience in waterway health and/or water quality monitoring and evaluation (including oversight of contractor delivered monitoring programs);
advanced capability in ArcGIS Pro, including spatial data management, analysis and production of reporting ready outputs;
sound understanding of State and Commonwealth reporting expectations and the preparation of accurate, defensible technical inputs for project reporting;
strong organisational skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain disciplined data systems (metadata, version control, audit trails) and deliver outputs on time;
strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical monitoring information into clear, usable products for stakeholders;
ability to coordinate data collection and information sharing with internal and external stakeholders;
experience working effectively both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Our Living Landscapes program delivers projects that improve biodiversity, habitat condition and ecological function across a range of landscapes, including urban, peri-urban, riparian, wetland and rural environments. These activities are supported by in-house expertise in biodiversity, revegetation, wetland and waterway management, monitoring and evaluation, and community engagement.
Staff working within the Living Landscapes team have the opportunity to travel throughout the region from Townsville, working closely with landholders, community groups, Traditional Owners, local government and partner organisations to deliver practical, place-based outcomes. From time to time, the role may also provide opportunities for interstate and intrastate travel to support collaboration, knowledge sharing and professional development associated with broader NRM initiatives. Collaboration, adaptability and a strong field presence are central to how the team operates.

Essential
Qualifications and Technical Expertise: Tertiary qualifications in natural resource management, environmental science, water science, or a related discipline, or demonstrated equivalent experience, with the ability to apply specialist waterway and wetland ecology knowledge to practical monitoring and evaluation.
Monitoring and Evaluation Experience: Demonstrated experience in monitoring and evaluation for environmental or water quality projects, with a strong focus on data integrity, quality assurance, and fit-for-purpose outputs.
Data Management and Analytical Skills: Demonstrated experience managing complex datasets, including contractor-supplied monitoring data, with strong organisational, analytical and reporting skills to produce accurate, high-quality monitoring outputs.
Spatial Analysis Capability: Proficient in ArcGIS Pro, including spatial data management, analysis, and presentation for monitoring, evaluation, and reporting purposes.
Collaboration and Communication: Ability to work effectively with Project Managers, technical specialists, and external partners, providing trusted technical advice and integrating monitoring with on-ground activities.

Field and Operational Capability: Ability to work safely and effectively in outdoor and remote environments, including field-based waterway and wetland monitoring.
Mobility: Current C class driver’s licence and the ability and willingness to travel within the region and work safely and effectively in outdoor and remote environments.
