- Fixed Term Full Time
- Base salary range of $107,467 to $110,500 per annum plus 12% superannuation (including leave loading)
- SCHADS level 5/3
- Based in Alice Springs with outreach to remote communities in far north SA and southern NT

About the Role
We are seeking a senior and experienced Financial Counsellor to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in expanding access to high-quality financial counselling services while strengthening outcomes for individuals and families experiencing financial hardship.
In this role, you will manage a dedicated caseload of clients with complex financial needs, contributing to a significant reduction in waitlist times. You will also provide brief interventions, financial capability support, microfinance assistance, and emergency relief to clients requiring more immediate, “light touch” responses — ensuring people receive the right level of support at the right time.
As a senior financial counsellor, you will provide professional guidance and mentorship to less experienced and newly qualified staff. Your leadership will support skill development, foster a collaborative learning culture, and enhance overall service quality. By strengthening internal capability and modelling best-practice approaches, you will contribute to improved client satisfaction, workforce confidence, and long-term community trust in our organisation.
This role is ideal for an experienced Financial Counsellor who is passionate about delivering person-centred support, building team capability, and making a meaningful impact in the remote communities around Alice Springs and in South Australia.
The Senior Financial Counsellor should have:
- Diploma of Community Services – Financial Counselling
- Minimum of three years’ experience in community services work with complex clients (experience with First Nations clients and/or in a remote setting highly desirable)
- Passion for social and economic justice and an understanding that poverty is political and structural
- Skills/experience in case management, including the ability to support clients with readiness to make financial change, meeting needs, goal setting, and advocacy
- Excellent verbal, written, organisational, IT and problem solving skills
- Openness to continuous learning, doing things differently
- Resilient, calm and able to cope with consistent pressure and volume of workload
- Emotionally intelligent, with awareness of own behaviour and impact on others
In Your First Six Months You’ll:
- Meet your colleagues and clients
- Undertake cultural awareness and trauma informed practice training
- Get out into the community through assertive outreach – visiting local cultural organisations and contacts
- Work collaboratively within a holistic, trauma-informed and culturally respectful framework – and help shape how we do things together
- Be part of a passionate, supportive team that values laughter, openness, and shared learning in a workplace where every voice matters
Note: Community work requires good psychological and physical fitness. Due to the demands of the environment, this type of work is not recommended for people who have or are experiencing significant and unresolved trauma/mental ill health, major life upheavals or certain physical/chronic illnesses.
