The Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) is a leading non-profit organisation based in Sydney, dedicated to advancing melanoma research, treatment, and education. Its Biospecimen Bank (biobank), established in 1998, plays a critical role in supporting research by collecting, processing, storing, and distributing high-quality patient specimens. The Biobank also play a key role in support for clinical trials through specimen processing and administrative assistance.
MIA is seeking a motivated Biobank Technical Assistant to join its team, based at the Poche Centre. Reporting to the Clinical Biospecimen Coordinator, the role involves the collection, processing, storage, and shipment of patient specimens, as well as supporting clinical trials. The position requires strong scientific knowledge, organisational skills, and a commitment to ethical and regulatory standards. This is a full-time, one-year fixed-term role with the opportunity for extension.
Major Responsibilities
- Collect blood from patients receiving treatment at MIA, working closely with internal and external teams to meet research needs.
- Process, store, and retrieve biological specimens from patients whilst adhering to strict protocols.
- Organise timely shipment of biospecimens to samples to national and international testing laboratories.
- Assist with the preparation for upcoming clinical trials by reviewing protocols, workflows and inventories.
- Maintain laboratory records to a high standard and ensure that biospecimen annotations and inventory are accurate and up to date.
- Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), regulatory guidelines, and ethical standards in biobanking and clinical trial activities.
- Work with internal and external teams to facilitate efficient specimen collection and research support.
- Perform administrative duties including data entry, query resolutions pertaining to clinical trials, housekeeping duties, receive orders and deliveries and manage stock control.

Essential
- Tertiary qualifications of at least a Certificate/Diploma/bachelor’s degree in science / biomedical science or relevant field or an equivalent recognised qualification relevant to Biobanking, Medical Laboratory Science or relevant speciality.
- Experience in Venepuncture.
- Experience working with patients in pathology, clinical or hospital setting, and an understanding of good laboratory practice guidelines.
- Proven ability to adhere to instructions and follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in maintaining database records.
- Proven ability to multitask, prioritize workload, and meet competing deadlines efficiently.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues, adapt to changing priorities, and suggest process improvements.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated capacity to liaise with professionals across multiple disciplines.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve shared goals, as well independently without close supervision.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Desirable (experience in one or more of the following areas would be an asset)
- Experience in processing biological specimens (blood, stool, urine).
- Knowledge of biobanking and/or clinical trials·
- You will be flexible in terms of working hours and be available for early/late
collections.
