Casual Potato Graders

Overview

This hands-on position is responsible for accurate and safe horticultural grading and any other farm operations as reasonably requested. Teamwork is essential whilst delivering operational requirements of the farm in an environment where exemplary workplace health and safety culture is mandatory.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handling horticultural products whilst on a moving harvester ensuring the adherence of safety policies including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Whilst grading discard inferior or defective potatoes or foreign matter during active potato harvest operations.
  • Complete farm operations under the direction of the relevant operations manager – e.g. cropping, irrigation or potato manager which may include assistance with planting and harvesting.
  • Communicating with supervisors and peers by providing up to date information face to face or by telephone or email about relevant farm information including but not limited to any safety concerns.
  • Performing physical work requiring considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
  • Operation of farm machinery including but not limited to loaders, JCB telehandler, tractors and forklifts if relevant licences and/or competency is determined.
  • Carry out general farm repairs and maintenance and farm development including but not exclusively fencing, water reticulation systems and general planting.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance on plant and equipment.
  • Contribute to staff and safety meetings including toolbox meetings and raise any safety issues in a timely manner.
  • Take responsibility for professional development and attend field days, workshops and other relevant training as agreed and make sure training records are maintained.
  • Undertake all general farm duties including but not limited to livestock, potato and broadacre cropping operations to ensure all farm operations have appropriate back-up and coverage across the team.
  • Any other duties as reasonably requested by management.

Skills and Experience

  • Good Interpersonal skills.
  • Flexible to work weekends and extended hours through busy periods
  • Able to meet the physical demands of the position
  • Positive attitude, strong initiative and work ethic
  • Punctual, honest and reliable
  • Qualification in Agriculture (desirable)
  • Previous experience operating farm machinery (desirable)
  • Knowledge of irrigation practices (desirable).
  • Chemical User Permit or willingness to complete.
  • Good computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
