Lifeline Australia is a national suicide prevention charity providing all Australians experiencing emotional distress with access to 24-hour crisis support and suicide prevention services. This is achieved through a partnership of over 10,000 committed volunteers and their member centres in communities across the nation.
Lifeline Australia Ltd (LLA) is located in Sydney, with small teams of dedicated staff employed to lead funding and corporate relations activities, and to provide the design, technical infrastructure and governance of services across Lifeline’s member network.
LLA recently embarked on an exciting transformation journey, guided by an ambitious strategic plan. The 2024-2027 Strategic Plan will see enhancements across services, technology and workforce to bring about better outcomes and a more accessible and flexible support system for help-seekers
ROLE
As part of a small team, the Information and Privacy Officer will support organisational activities to lift capability and drive growth whilst delivering strong levels of governance and risk oversight, with respect to personal information, in a highly dynamic environment.
The Information and Privacy Officer will provide support to the Executive Director, Governance, Legal and Risk (ED GLR) to deliver operational privacy outcomes and provide high quality, practical privacy and personal data governance advice across a broad range of business and service delivery activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage privacy operations, including:
- APP 12 access requests and other informal Requests for Information (RFIs)
- Subpoenas, summonses, warrants, statutory notices and other orders
- Complaints and enquiries related to privacy and personal data governance
- Working closely with Legal and Risk as required.
Coordinate privacy incident response and breach notification in line with legislative and organisational requirements.
Support and guide stakeholders on Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) for new projects, systems and service acquisitions.
Provide practical privacy and personal data governance advice across business and service delivery activities.
Collaborate across Legal, Risk, Quality & Knowledge, Data, Technology, Research and other teams to map personal information holdings and identify privacy risks and trends.
Maintain strong and secure privacy record‑keeping, data retention schedules and privacy risk registers.
Engage with Lifeline members, committees and working groups to uplift privacy practices across the Lifeline network.
Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of privacy and personal data governance frameworks, policies and procedures.
Contribute privacy advice to senior leadership and the Board, and help embed a strong, organisation‑wide privacy culture through training, guidance and communications.
ABOUT YOU
Minimum two year’s experience in privacy and personal data governance. Strong knowledge of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), the Australian Privacy Principles, Notifiable Data Breaches Scheme and operational management of RFI obligations (or GIPA/FOI/similar privacy-related requirements).
Preferred legal or business qualification or extensive experience in an environment holding sensitive personal information.
Excellent organisational, time management, and interpersonal skills, with an ability to meet deadlines and prioritise competing regulatory and stakeholder needs.
Demonstrated ability to engage with internal and external stakeholders positively and effectively, with a professional, enthusiastic and “can-do” attitude.
Well-developed ability to work independently and as part of a team, exercising initiative, critical thinking and judgment.
High proficiency in all Microsoft Office Suite packages.
