The Role

A rare opportunity has become available for a qualified, experienced, and passionate Head Chef to join the team at Gorilla Grind Café. This is a hands-on leadership role in a busy, fast-paced environment, ideal for someone who thrives on both creativity and operational excellence.

Reporting to the Café Manager and Group Operations Manager, you will lead a small, dedicated kitchen team while overseeing all aspects of kitchen operations. From menu creation and costing to purchasing and roster management, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality food while maintaining strong cost control and performance outcomes.

This role requires flexibility, with shifts across early mornings and varied service periods.

Key Responsibilities and Skills

    • Menu Development: Create innovative, seasonal, and high-quality breakfast and lunch menus that cater to a diverse customer base, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.
    • Food Preparation: Oversee and participate in the preparation and cooking of dishes, ensuring consistency, taste, and presentation standards are maintained.
    • Kitchen Management: Manage kitchen staff, including scheduling, training, and delegating tasks to ensure smooth kitchen operations during busy periods.
    • Quality Control: Maintain the highest standards of food quality, freshness, and hygiene. Ensure all dishes are prepared to café specifications and customer satisfaction.
    • Inventory Management: Monitor inventory levels, order supplies, and manage stock to minimise waste and control food costs.
    • Health & Safety Compliance: Ensure that all kitchen activities comply with food safety regulations, health codes, and workplace safety standards.
    • Cost Management: Work within budgetary constraints to manage food costs, labor expenses, and other overheads.
    • Team Leadership: Foster a positive and productive work environment, encouraging teamwork, communication, and professional development among kitchen staff.
    • Promote high work standards within the team
    Requirements:
    • Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery or equivalent
    • Minimum 3-year post apprenticeship experience in a busy café / a la carte environment
    • Passionate about food and customer experience
    • Must have previously held a Head Chef or Sous Chef role
    • Natural leader, capable of guiding, motivating, and developing a dedicated, passionate team
    • Positive, “can-do” attitude
