Lead a dedicated team delivering holistic youth services, including the innovative Aboriginal-led Village 21 program. This role supports staff to provide culturally safe, trauma-informed, and strengths-based support for Aboriginal young people, helping them build independence, strengthen cultural identity, and connect with family, education, training, and employment. The position plays a key role in supporting young people across housing, wellbeing, and community engagement within a supportive, culturally grounded environment.

Organisational Profile

GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of about 200 staff, GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.

GEGAC advocates for the self-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services that enhance social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, with culture at the heart of everything we do.

Position Purpose

The Youth Services Team Leader, reporting to the Senior Manager, will lead and support staff in the development and delivery of holistic youth services across the organisation, including the Aboriginal-led Village 21. Village 21 is an innovative, culturally grounded accommodation and mentoring model designed to support Aboriginal young people to strengthen independence, cultural identity, and life skills within a supported community environment. The role provides culturally safe, trauma-informed, and strengths-based guidance to support young Aboriginal people in building independence, cultural identity, family connection, and engagement in education, training, or employment. The role will encompass broader responsibilities across multiple aspects of young people’s lives, including housing, wellbeing, and community connection.

Key Selection Criteria 

·         Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, Aboriginal culture, community, and self-determination, with the ability to embed culturally safe practice in services supporting Aboriginal young people.

·         Demonstrated experience in leading and supervising staff, including performance management, coaching, and supporting professional development within a youth or community services context.

·         Proven ability to exercise a high level of responsibility and autonomy, providing specialist advice and guidance across youth programs and complex practice matters.

·         Strong knowledge of the needs, strengths, and challenges experienced by Aboriginal young people, including understanding the causes and impacts of homelessness, intergenerational trauma, and systemic disadvantage.

·         Demonstrated experience in holistic assessment, case management, and coordinated referral pathways that support young people across multiple life domains, including housing, wellbeing, education, and employment.

·         Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal young people, families, Elders, community members, and diverse stakeholders.

·         Demonstrated ability to manage risk, maintain confidentiality, and uphold ethical and legislative requirements within youth and community service delivery.

·         Well-developed organisational and administrative skills, including experience with data systems, reporting requirements, and Microsoft Office application.

Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).

·         Valid Victorian driver’s licence    ESSENTIAL

·         Degree with substantial experience/port graduate qualification or Diploma with substantial experience    ESSENTIAL

·         A satisfactory Working with Children Check and Fit2Work Police Check    ESSENTIAL

·         A person of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander background    DESIRABLE

·         Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with GEGAC requirements    ESSENTIAL
