Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) is the nation’s leading voice on exercise and sports science. We govern and represent approximately 10,000 degree-qualified accredited exercise professionals who support Australians to reach their health and performance goals.
About your role
The Health Economist plays a key role in strengthening the evidence base that demonstrates the value and impact of exercise science and Accredited professionals within Australia’s healthcare system. Working closely with the team, the role delivers economic modelling, cost-effectiveness analysis and health system evaluation to inform ESSA’s policy, advocacy and strategic initiatives. It translates complex data into clear, actionable insights to support government engagement and sector influence. Through this work, the role helps elevate recognition of exercise professionals across the healthcare system.
You will:
- Conduct economic evaluations to assess the cost-effectiveness and impact of exercise interventions and services delivered by Accredited Professionals
- Develop and apply economic models to analyse healthcare outcomes, system efficiencies and funding implications
- Translate complex economic and health data into clear, accessible insights for decision-makers
- Build robust economic evidence that demonstrates the value of exercise science and exercise physiology within the healthcare system
- Support the development of economic frameworks that strengthen ESSA’s advocacy and policy priorities
- Contribute to research and evidence initiatives that advance understanding of the economic impact of exercise interventions
- Provide economic insights to inform policy submissions and advocacy initiatives
- Contribute evidence that supports ESSA’s engagement with government and healthcare stakeholders
Your competitive edge will include:
- Qualifications in health economics, economics, public health, health service planning, health policy or a related discipline
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and evidence
- Experience working in health policy, research, government, consulting or a related environment
- Experience applying evaluation methods such as cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-benefit analysis or health system modelling
- Ability to translate technical economic analysis into clear, practical insights for non-technical audiences
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- A genuine interest in improving health outcomes and strengthening the role of exercise within Australia’s healthcare system
