Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) is the largest environmental legal centre in the Australia-Pacific, dedicated to protecting our climate, communities and shared environment by providing access to justice, running ground-breaking litigation and leading law reform advocacy.

The opportunity:

In this role, you’ll lead our fundraising, marketing and communications (FMC) strategy and champion our values of collaboration, inclusion and justice across the organisation. You’ll have the opportunity to design and deliver strategies and initiatives that elevate our brand, deepen our engagement with supporters and strengthen EDO’s communications.

As part of the Executive Leadership Team, you’ll work closely with the CEO, Executive Directors and the Board, providing high-level strategic advice and planning, leading marketing and communications planning and overseeing systems and processes that drive impact, consistency and growth. This is a chance to play a pivotal role in the continued development of an organisation where people feel valued, supported and empowered to deliver on our mission.

Candidate Profile:

We are seeking a driven, strategic, committed, and experienced leader to drive our fundraising, marketing and communications strategy and lead our FMC Team. You will have senior leadership experience in fundraising, marketing and communications, with a proven track record of developing and implementing forward-thinking marketing strategies. As an experienced manager, you will foster a positive team culture, empowering your team to reach new heights while delivering on and driving strategic outcomes.

You will be a purpose-driven leader with deep experience in brand, communications and advocacy-led campaigns that influence public conversation and inspire action. You will bring a strategic and ethical approach to storytelling and stakeholder engagement, aligning marketing activity with EDO’s values and mission.

With exceptional emotional intelligence and a collaborative mindset, you will work closely with the CEO and Executive team, leading on EDO’s fundraising, marketing and communications matters.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement EDO’s Fundraising, Marketing & Communications aligned to the EDO Strategic Plan and update annually.
  • Provide high-level advice to the CEO on fundraising growth, brand positioning and engagement and design initiatives that strengthen organisational impact and visibility.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of fundraising and communications activity across the supporter and donor lifecycle using insights to inform strategy and continuous improvement.
  • Build the capability of the Fundraising, Marketing & Communications team through coaching, professional development and performance frameworks.
  • Support EDO’s commitment to reconciliation and First Nations engagement by ensuring culturally informed communications and fundraising practices in collaboration with the First Nations Program.

Key selection criteria:

  • Demonstrated experience 10+ years of experience in leading a Fundraising, Marketing & Communications function and team including developing of forward-thinking FMC strategies.
  • Substantial experience leading or advising senior management on FMC strategies including managing reputational risk and leading change initiatives.
  • Experience reporting to a Board on FMC strategies and compliance.
  • Experience in equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives, with strong cultural competency and a respectful approach to engagement with First Nations Communities.
  • Exceptional communication, influence and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability and willingness to move between the strategic and the operational as the role requires.
  • Experience in organisations with distributed teams (desirable).

Working with clients face-to-face:

  • EDO works with diverse peoples and groups across the Australian and Pacific communities, including people who are considered a high-risk group in terms of COVID-19.
  • In order to ensure the safety of all EDO employees and the people we work with and around, staff visiting overburdened communities are required to take a COVID-19 test three (3) days prior and on the day of travel to the overburdened community.
