Purpose of the Role

To maintain the functionality, safety, and appearance of facilities, grounds, and assets across Cairns and surrounding areas. This role combines general maintenance and repairs with gardening and yard upkeep, ensuring all sites are safe, well-presented, and ready for community use.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Site Care

  • Perform general site maintenance and repairs, including fences, gates, paths, playgrounds, and garden infrastructure.
  • Inspect, maintain, and safely operate tools, equipment, and vehicles; perform basic car maintenance as required (fuel, washing, minor servicing).
  • Manage and track company assets, tools, and equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests and identify risks or hazards around facilities.

Garden & Yard Upkeep

  • Mow lawns, edge gardens, and maintain turf areas.
  • Trim hedges, shrubs, and trees safely.
  • Plant, water, fertilize, and care for flowers, shrubs, and other plants.
  • Remove weeds, debris, and rubbish from gardens and yards.
  • Assist with landscaping projects, including laying mulch, soil preparation, and irrigation systems.

Community Engagement

  • Support community programs and events by assisting with setup, coordination, and engagement.
  • Operate and manage community carts, including restocking and organizing equipment or resources.
  • Deliver goods, equipment, or resources to various sites or community members as required.
  • Maintain positive communication with staff, clients, and community members.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Previous experience in general maintenance, gardening, or landscaping preferred.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs and basic mechanical work.
  • Knowledge of plant care, lawn maintenance, and landscaping techniques.
  • Physically fit and able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Current driver’s license and reliable transport for travel to multiple sites.
  • Good communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time employment depending on operational needs.
  • Work involves manual labor, lifting, bending, and exposure to outdoor weather.
  • Travel between sites within Cairns and surrounding areas using company or personal vehicle.
