Countersight is a specialist cybersecurity company delivering security research, capability development and consulting services to clients within government and across the private sector. We are independent, Australian, and Canberra based but with the flexibility to operate Australia wide.
Our team works on interesting problems across the entire technology stack, from embedded systems to web and mobile applications, finding creative ways to deliver the capability our clients need.
The Role
Location: Canberra
Hours: Casual part-time (10-20 hours per week)
Duration: Up to 12 months, with the possibility to extend to full-time on graduation.
Salary: Competitive based on experience (exceeding Professional Services Award)
We are looking for motivated final year (or entering final year in 2026) student studying IT, software engineering or cybersecurity to join our team as a Cadet Software Engineer & Security Consultant. Working in small teams to solve unique problems, this role would suit people that enjoy being given wide latitude to overcome technical challenges, are comfortable rapidly adapting to new technologies and are enthusiastic about expanding their skills and experience.
This position will be on a flexible part-time basis, with the possibility to extend to full-time on graduation. Countersight will provide training and mentoring to the successful candidate, providing opportunities to work on interesting projects within the cybersecurity field with a long-term view of developing the candidate into a key member of our team.
Within this role you will:
- Work on development projects using Typescript, React, NodeJS and Go.
- Perform UX/UI design for new and existing features.
- Research and develop capability based on a wide range of technologies and network protocols.
- Build, deploy and implement features based on popular virtualization technologies and cloud technologies.
- Be based in Countersight’s Braddon office, a short walk from some of Canberra’s most popular cafes, restaurants, brewery, coffee roasters and tram network.
The successful candidate will:
- be self-motivated and have a passion for learning,
- have a demonstrated interest in cybersecurity,
- be competent with Javascript, ideally with some experience working with React or an equivalent front-end framework,
- be proficient in software development practices and tools,
- have strong communication skills.
The following would make a candidate stand out:
- cybersecurity experience,
- software engineering experience within a professional context,
- skills working with user interface design,
- strong formal communication skills,
- experience working with Linux operating systems, virtualization or cloud-based technologies,
- experience with C/C++, Go, Python,
- experience with embedded and mobile systems.
