Purpose of Position:

As part of Comwire IT’s Senior Leadership Team, this role works alongside other leaders to ensure the effective delivery of the company’s strategy and vision. The Head of Finance will drive team performance overseeing daily finance operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bookkeeping, compliance, and management reporting. Acting as a trusted partner to both finance leadership and operational teams, this role combines hands-on accounting responsibilities with opportunities to influence strategy, process improvements, commercial decision-making, steering the company’s financial health and optimisation of its resources. 

 

Main Duties & Responsibilities: 

Leadership & Efficiency Improvement 

  • Lead, mentor, develop, and train the Finance team, fostering our values and a culture based on accountability, collaboration, and transparency; 
  • Oversee the day to day financial operations, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, reporting, and compliance, working closely with the Leadership team, and external Accountants; 
  • Drive continuous improvement of finance processes, systems, and reporting to improve financial performance & resource efficiency; 
  • Support the implementation of new finance tools, CRM/Ticketing upgrades, or automation initiatives; 
  • Set clear objectives, provide guidance, and conduct performance evaluations to optimize the team’s performance. 

Reporting & Compliance 

  • Lead financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and analysis to support decision-making and optimise financial resources; 
  • Prepare regular financial reports, provide insights into financial performance, and present recommendations to the executive team and stakeholders; 
  • Develop financial models to assess profitability, pricing, and client managed services agreements; 
  • Support tenders, new business development, sponsorship renewals and investment decisions with financial analysis, and recommendations; 
  • Ensure regular audits are conducted for client billing accuracy & transparency. 

Accounts Payable & Receivable (AP & AR) 

  • Oversee the end-to-end Accounts Payable function, ensuring timely and accurate processing of supplier invoices, linking billable items to client invoices; 
  • Review AP ageing reports and optimise cash flow through effective payment scheduling. 
  • Manage Accounts receivable invoicing for recurring MSP agreements, projects, and ad-hoc services; 
  • Monitor and follow up on outstanding receivables to minimise debtor days; 
  • Where necessary, discuss & negotiate agreement, billing agreement terms or timelines with vendors, clients and other varying levels of stakeholders – CFO’s, Accountants;
  • Reconcile AR balances and partner with account managers to resolve billing disputes.  

Bookkeeping & ATO Compliance 

  • Prepare and post journals, including accruals, prepayments, loan accounts and adjustments. 
  • Maintain accurate general ledger balances and ensure proper coding of transactions. 
  • Reconcile key accounts such as bank, payroll clearing, and GST. 
  • Have oversight on weekly payroll to ensure it is prepared & processed correctly; 
  • Manage expense reimbursements and credit card reconciliations. 
  • Working with our External Accountants, Prepare the requirements for BAS lodgement, including GST and PAYG obligations. 
  • Ensure compliance with Superannuation Guarantee, FBT, and payroll tax requirements. 
  • Manage financial risks by implementing robust internal controls and compliance measures. 
  • Ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements, as well as industry best practices in financial operations, such as workcover insurance for each office state. 

Other Duties  

  • Vendor and contract management – work with other senior members of the team to negotiate supplier agreements and unit pricing, for example, software and SaaS based products the business uses or on-sells to clients. 
  • Oversee commercial leases for office space and other commitments such as data centres. 
  • Work with external legal to provide input to contracts and terms.

  • Technology and Tools Proficiency: Familiarity with financial software, reporting tools, and advanced spreadsheet applications for financial modeling and analysis. 
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Proficiency in analysing finance data and market trends to make data-driven decisions that optimise financial strategies. 
  • Negotiation & Relationship Managemnet: Ability to negotiate effectively and manage relationships with financial institutions, auditors, and other external stakeholders.

Financial Skills & Experience 

  • Tertiary qualifications in Finance / Bookkeeping, Accounting, Economics, or a related field. CPA, CFA, or MBA is a plus.
  • Proven experience in a senior bookkeeping / financial leadership role, preferably within the IT or technology industry (5 years+).
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement processes aligned with business objectives. 
  • Proficiency in financial software (Xero), CRM/ERP software, reporting tools, and advanced Excel skills – experience with BI platforms desirable, not mandatory.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills including managing remote teams both on/offshore.
  • Experience operating within an SME or growing business environment.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to support business leaders with financial modelling and insights.
  • Experience working with Banking and creditors to secure finance and funding as required.
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions desirable, not mandatory.
