The position
The Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible for developing and implementing
training sessions, and to design and implement individual strength and conditioning training programs for students. This role is part time (0.5FTE) with a significant part of the role operating before/after school hours; and potentially some weekend activity.
Coaching Face to face hours (remaining hours agreed with successful candidate)
- Monday: 3:15-5:30pm
- Tuesday: 3:15-5:30pm
(potential for AM split shift)
- Wednesday: 7-8:30am
- Thursday: 3:15-5:30pm
- Friday: 7-8:30am
Note: based on current schedule, there may be opportunity to adjust in future.
Strength and Conditioning
- In consultation with the Head of Sport, develop and implement a strength and conditioning program, providing for; group-based sessions, individual programs and general gym supervision.
- In consultation with the Head of Sport, implement a comprehensive, age-appropriate strength and conditioning program for assigned student/athletes.
- Work with Sport staff to schedule and deliver gym inductions for new users of the strength and condition gym and equipment.
- Provide regular evidence-based feedback to students during active coaching and supervision periods to help them improve performance
- Maintain accurate athlete profiles and programs to assist with athlete performance reviews
and testing.
- Maintain current knowledge of industry standards and ensure that ‘best practice’ methods are adhered to within the gym.
- Develop tracking systems to monitor student/athlete progress.
- In consultation with the Head of Sport, support student injury management and rehabilitation; including communication with relevant coaches/practitioners.
- Foster collaboration among Sport, Health and Physical Education (HPE) staff, coaches
and other departments to support student-athletes, targeted sports programs and
HPE classes.
- Maintain a clean and tidy environment that induces efficiency and safety to students and staff within the strength and conditioning gym. This extends to minor cleaning of resistance
training and other fitness equipment.
- Supervision of equipment use and ensuring facility operational requirements are adhered to including maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
- Work with the Sport staff on the coordination, logistics and administration of training sessions and other events as required.
- Collaborate with sport staff maintain current information, booklets and other materials necessary to the programs.
- Ensure that all staff and coaches are informed of relevant school policies and
procedures including applicable workplace, health and safety standards.
- Contribute to and ensure the facility and programs are compliant with the relevant risk management and workplace health and safety standards.
- Represent the school community; this involves communicating to staff, students, parents
and friends through the school newsletter, website, school assemblies and
general communication lines as required.
Pastoral Care and Student Wellbeing
- In consultation with the Head of Sport, structure the program and expectations to
facilitate a positive, high-quality experience and supportive culture for all
participants.
- Develop positive relationships with students and encourage their active participation
in CGGS co-curricular Sports Program.
- Provide a safe and secure training environment for students.
- Demonstrate leadership in upholding and adhering to the school values and ensuring students
demonstrate consistency in attendance, uniform and training application.
To note: It is the nature of the work at CGGS that tasks and responsibilities are, in
many circumstances, unpredictable and varied. All staff members are therefore
expected to work in a flexible way when the occasion arises and undertake tasks
that are not specifically covered in the position description.
Skills and experience
- A degree in Exercise Science, Sports Science, Physical Education, or a related field would be advantageous.
- Certification as a Strength and Conditioning Coach, such as Level 1 or 2 from the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association (ASCA) or CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning
Specialist) from the NSCA.
- Current membership with ASCA or CSCS or equivalent
- Experience and technical knowledge in the implementation of age-appropriate strength and conditioning frameworks across various sports.
- Experience working with adolescent girls within a school setting would be advantageous
- A comprehensive understanding of the ASCA Position Stand on Child and Youth Resistance Training is preferred but not essential.
- First Aid and CPR certifications.
- Ability to communicate sensitively and respectfully with students, parents and staff.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision and cooperatively within a team environment.
- Ability to work flexible work hours (before/after school and on weekends).
