The position
The Boarding House Supervisor plays a key role in supporting the wellbeing, development and day-to-day care of students within the Boarding House. The position requires strong pastoral
instincts, sound judgement, and the ability to build positive relationships while maintaining clear expectations and routines. Duty is scheduled during student term time and primarily occurs in the evenings and on weekends. The role of a Boarding House Supervisor is varied and includes:
Student Care and Wellbeing
- Provide high-quality pastoral care, supporting students’ emotional wellbeing, resilience and personal development
- Assist boarders to settle into Boarding House life, particularly those experiencing homesickness or challenges with peer relationships, routines or academic work
- Support students with daily living requirements while fostering independence and responsibility
- Supervise evening routines, including preparation for bed and lights out
- Provide basic first aid and medical assistance when required
Active Supervision and Behaviour Management
- Lead and supervise students within the Boarding House environment
- Maintain active supervision of boarders at all times, including consistent awareness of student whereabouts, activities and wellbeing
- Proactively monitor Boarding House environments (e.g. common areas, dormitories, study spaces) to ensure safety, appropriate behaviour and positive engagement
- Supervise study periods, promoting a calm, purposeful environment and providing assistance where required
- Undertake rostered duties, including evenings and weekends
Programs, Activities and Engagement
- Supervise and attend Boarding House activities, excursions and outings
- Support the delivery of a positive, engaging Boarding House program
- Assist with student transportation within Canberra as required (a clean full licence is required for this role)
Boarding Operations and Administration
- Assist with the organisation and day-to-day operation of the Boarding House
- Support administrative functions within the Boarding House office
- Ensure Boarding House systems, procedures and routines are consistently followed
- Maintain accurate, timely and relevant student records
- Assist with boarder arrivals, departures and transition processes
Professional Responsibilities
- Model the values of Canberra Girls Grammar School and the Boarding House at all times
- Demonstrate professionalism, leadership and positive role modelling for students
- Attend staff meetings and Boarding House events as required
- Undertake mandatory and relevant professional training
- Perform additional duties as directed by the Principal and/or Director of Boarding
Duty is generally scheduled during student term time and is primarily scheduled in the evenings and on weekends.

It is the nature of the work at CGGS that tasks and responsibilities are, in many circumstances, unpredictable and varied. All staff members are therefore expected to work in a flexible way when the occasion arises and undertake tasks that are not specifically covered in the position description.
Skills and experience
- Demonstrated willingness to support adolescent girls with their social, emotional and academic development
- A team player with strong organisation skills who can also work independently
- A confident decision maker who is calm under pressure
- Personable and dynamic with effective written and verbal communication
- Ability to relate well to young women, staff and parents
- Current First Aid certificate and Youth Mental Health First Aid or a willingness to obtain
- Working with Vulnerable People card and Police check
- Full drivers’ licence
- Previous experience in a boarding or educational setting is desirable
- Experience as a tutor or providing academic support is desirable
