Beam Health is seeking passionate Peer Workers with lived or living experience of mental health challenges and service use to join our Central Coast Medicare Mental Health Centre (MMHC) satellites.

The Role
As a Peer Worker, you will draw meaningfully and safely on your lived experience to:
- Provide warm, empathetic first contact for walk-ins and visitors.
- Offer validation, de-escalation and hope through intentional, boundaried storytelling.
- Support people to navigate MMHC services and external community pathways.
- Strengthen recovery-oriented, trauma-informed and person-led practice across the service.
- Co-develop or co-facilitate peer groups, activities and co-design initiatives.
- Work alongside clinicians, care navigation and front-of-house teams to ensure a welcoming, seamless service experience.
This position actively contributes to an emerging peer practice framework at MMHC, with access to regular peer supervision and practice support.
Key Responsibilities
Welcoming & Engagement
- Provide a warm welcome for walk-ins and scheduled appointments.
- Offer supportive listening, de-escalation and practical assistance.
- Use purposeful lived experience to instill hope and reduce stigma.
Navigation & Coordination
- Support people to understand their options and navigate internal and external pathways.
- Provide warm handovers and assist with follow-ups alongside the Care Navigator/Intake team.
Recovery-Oriented, Trauma-Informed Support
- Deliver brief, strengths-based supports (e.g., coping plans, goal setting, service system literacy).
- Contribute to single-session support where appropriate and within peer scope.
Groups, Peer Activities & Co-Design
- Co-facilitate peer and psychoeducation groups.
- Participate in service improvement and co-design projects.
Quality & Safety
- Maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Follow risk escalation, critical incident and complaint reporting processes.
- Uphold confidentiality, boundaries and ethical peer work practice.
Lived/Living Experience Requirement
This role is specifically for someone with lived or living experience of mental health challenges and service use who is willing and able to use that experience purposefully and safely in line with peer practice values and Beam policies.
Essential Criteria
- Lived/living experience of mental health challenges and service use, with capacity for safe, boundaried disclosure.
- Certificate IV in AOD, Mental Health, Peer Work, or Diploma of Community Services (or working toward).
- Alignment with recovery-oriented, trauma-informed and person-led practice.
- Strong interpersonal skills—empathy, cultural humility, active listening, advocacy and de-escalation.
- Ability to assist people with service navigation and warm handovers.
- Ability to work within walk-in and brief support models.
- Competent documentation, record-keeping and digital system use.
- Understanding of confidentiality, boundaries and risk escalation.
Desirable
- Experience in peer support, group facilitation, community work or health navigation.
- Knowledge of Central Coast service systems, PHN-commissioned services and local referral pathways.
Role Conditions
- Fixed-term until 30 June 2026, minimum 0.6 FTE (FT/PT/Casual considered).
- Rostering may include ensuring walk-in coverage during business hours.
- Peer supervision and operational support provided.
- Pre-employment checks required: WWCC, Police Check, vaccination compliance.
