Underground Sandvik Drill Fitter (Longhole) – Job Description

Role: Underground Heavy Duty Fitter (Sandvik Longhole Drill)

Equipment: Sandvik DL420 / DL432 (plus ancillary UG support gear as required)

Roster: As required (typically 14/14), day shift preferred (may require flexibility)

Location: Underground mine site (WA)

Purpose of the Role

Maintain and repair Sandvik longhole production drills to a high mechanical availability standard. You’ll handle planned maintenance, breakdown response, diagnostics and component change-outs in an underground environment, working closely with operators and site supervisors to keep drilling on schedule.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out scheduled servicing, inspections and planned maintenance on Sandvik longhole drills (daily/weekly/periodic services).

Diagnose faults and perform breakdown repairs: hydraulic, mechanical, pneumatic and basic electrical systems.

Complete component change-outs including (but not limited to) drifters, shanks, rotation units, feed systems, pumps, motors, cylinders, hoses and valves.

Identify and rectify leaks, wear points and recurring issues to improve reliability and uptime.

Conduct pre-start checks and contribute to preventative maintenance planning.

Maintain accurate maintenance records (service sheets, defect reports, parts used, downtime coding).

Manage tooling and service kits on site; keep work area clean and compliant.

Work with operations on drill performance issues (penetration, flushing, deviation influences, reaming impacts).

Support safe isolation, LOTO procedures and risk assessments (JHA/JSA) for all work.

Liaise with Sandvik/field service where required and assist with warranty/major repairs if applicable.

Assist with LV maintenance as needed (basic servicing, tires, minor repairs) depending on site setup.

Safety and Compliance

Follow site HSEC requirements and company procedures at all times.

Complete pre-task risk assessments and ensure correct isolations before any work.

Maintain good housekeeping, standards of workmanship, and hazard reporting.

Participate in toolbox talks, safety interactions and incident investigations if required.

Required Skills and Experience

Heavy Duty Mechanical Trade Qualification (Australian recognised).

Strong underground maintenance experience on production drills (Sandvik longhole preferred).

Competent in fault finding across hydraulics, mechanical systems and drill controls basics.

Proven ability to work independently underground with minimal supervision.

Solid understanding of planned maintenance systems and mechanical availability targets.

Strong communication with operators and supervisors, practical and solutions-focused.

Tickets and Licences

Current Manual Driver’s Licence.

Underground working at heights, first aid (preferred).

High Risk Work Licences: LF forklift / DG / WP (nice to have).

Ability to meet site medical and pass D&A.
