Allied Justice is a for-purpose community legal centre supporting people across 11 local government areas in Western Victoria. We are recruiting a Generalist Lawyer with minimum 2yrs post qualification experience or a Senior Generalist Lawyer with minimum 5 yrs PQE.

About the Role

  • This position forms part of our integrated legal service and involves:
  • Providing legal advice, casework and representation (including family violence duty lawyer work)
  • Managing a varied caseload across family violence and related civil matters
  • Participating in outreach, clinics, community legal education and stakeholder engagement
  • Contributing to law reform and systemic advocacy
  • Working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team

If appointed at Senior Lawyer level, the role will additionally include:

  • Mentoring and supervising junior lawyers
  • Contributing to service planning, practice improvements and legal leadership
  • Identifying emerging legal needs and sector issues

Who We’re Looking For

We are seeking a lawyer who:

  • Holds or is eligible to hold a current Victorian Lawyers Practising Certificate and is admitted to practice in the Federal Jurisdiction.
  • Critical interpersonal communication skills, including communicating with clients with empathy.
  • Sound organisational skills and ability to manage workload and competing demands, keep accurate files and records, meet deadlines and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Understanding and commitment to principles of social justice and to working effectively with vulnerable and disadvantaged people.
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge of Family Violence, and related civil matters such as tenancy and fines.
  • Demonstrated experience in undertaking direct legal services including information, advice, negotiation and advocacy on behalf of clients and representation of clients in courts and other legal settings.
  • Willingness to work within the office and outreach locations as required in our catchment regions.

Additional experience in supervision is desirable for appointment at the Senior Lawyer level.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant field, such as community development, social work, public policy or law, or significant experience in a similar role.
  • Current Victorian Driver’s Licence
  • Cleared National Police Record Check (it is the responsibility of all staff to notify the organization immediately if there are any changes to their criminal records status)
  • Current right to work in Australia
  • Valid, employer Working with Children Check
  • Physical ability to safely undertake all aspect of the position
