Description

About AIM Defence

AIM builds high‑power lasers that protect people from weaponised drones. We are an engineering‑led, focused, and disciplined team delivering complex systems into real operational environments.

The finance function at AIM supports a multi‑entity group with operations in Australia, North America, and Europe. Accuracy, judgement, and follow‑through matter.

The role

We are seeking a Finance & Accounts Intern to join our finance team of three and gain hands‑on exposure across core accounting and payroll activities.

Reporting to the Group Accountant, you will support day‑to‑day finance operations while developing a practical understanding of how accounting, payroll, reporting, and controls operate in a growing, international technology company.

This role is intended for someone currently undertaking an accounting degree who wants real responsibility, broad exposure, and a strong foundation for a future career in finance or accounting.

What you will do

You will support the finance team across a range of activities, including:

  • Accounts Payable: Processing supplier invoices, preparing payments, reconciling statements, tracking payment schedules, and resolving queries.
  • Accounts Receivable: Preparing customer invoices, monitoring receipts, following up outstanding accounts, and reconciling customer balances.
  • Payroll Support: Assisting with payroll preparation, validating timesheets and leave records, and maintaining accurate employee data.
  • Bookkeeping: Supporting general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, and month‑end close activities in line with internal controls.
  • Reporting and analysis: Assisting with data preparation for management reporting, forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis.
  • Process improvement: Identifying opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, and clarity across finance workflows.

You will also assist with ad‑hoc finance tasks as required.

What we are looking for

  • Currently studying (or recently graduated in) Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • A genuine interest in accounting and financial processes, and a desire to learn how they work in practice.
  • High attention to detail and care in handling financial data.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • A proactive approach and willingness to ask questions and take initiative.
  • Basic understanding of accounting principles, bookkeeping, payroll, or finance concepts.
  • Comfortable working in a small team while taking responsibility for assigned tasks.

Technical skills and experience

  • Competence with Microsoft Excel and standard office software.
  • Familiarity with accounting systems is expected; experience with Xero or Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is advantageous but not required.
  • Clear written communication and numeracy skills.

Security and practical requirements

  • Australian Citizenship.
  • Ability to obtain an NV1 security clearance.
  • Willingness and ability to work onsite in Port Melbourne.
  • Ability to commit reliably to the agreed internship schedule.
