Description

About AIM Defence

AIM builds high‑power lasers that protect people from weaponised drones. We are an engineering‑led, focused, and disciplined team working on complex hardware systems that move from design to deployment.

You will work alongside engineers specialising in laser physics, optics, mechanical design, electronics, and software, contributing directly to parts and assemblies that are used in live systems.

This is hands‑on work, in a real workshop, producing real hardware.

The role

We are seeking an Additive Manufacturing Technician to own the end‑to‑end operation of our metal additive manufacturing capability and to support broader workshop and fabrication activities.

This role spans CAD preparation through to finished parts, with responsibility for safe operation of the metal printer, post‑processing, and ongoing improvement of workshop practices. As the capability matures, you will help shape how additive manufacturing is integrated into R&D, production, and assembly workflows.

This role suits someone who is early to mid in their career, technically strong, motivated to learn, and wants to specialise in industrial additive manufacturing rather than remain in general machining.

What you will do

  • Prepare parts for metal additive manufacturing, including CAD modification and slicing.
  • Set up, operate, and monitor the Renishaw metal printer.
  • De‑build, post‑process, and inspect printed metal parts.
  • Produce FDM and resin printed parts used in FRACTL assemblies.
  • Operate workshop equipment including fibre laser cutter, CO₂ laser, and general fabrication machinery.
  • Support engineers and build teams with hands‑on fabrication and assembly tasks.
  • Contribute to workshop housekeeping, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Assist with workshop upgrades and facility improvements as required.

What we are looking for

  • A tertiary qualification in engineering or an engineering trade, such as:
    • Associate or Bachelor of Engineering
    • Advanced Diploma of Engineering
    • Certificate III or IV in Engineering (trade or non‑trade)
  • Practical workshop experience in a technical, production, or research environment.
  • Experience with CAD tools and basic design modification.
  • Experience with FDM or resin 3D printing (commercial, academic, or serious hobby use).
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and operate complex technical systems.
  • Strong safety awareness and experience working in an OHS‑controlled environment.
  • Willingness to perform hands‑on work, including routine workshop tasks.

Highly regarded

  • Experience with machining or welding.
  • Forklift licence.
  • First aid certification.

Security requirements

  • Australian Citizenship.
  • Ability to hold an NV1 security clearance.

Role Type

On-site • Permanent • Full-time • Mid-level Senior
