WHO ARE WE?

Lighthouse Foundation provides homes and therapeutic care programs to children and young people impacted by long-term neglect, abuse, and homelessness. Our focus is to create caring communities where kids can feel safe, form meaningful relationships, and begin to heal from traumatic experiences. For the past 30 years, our proven Model of Care has successfully transformed the lives of over 1,000 young people using a range of evidence-based strategies. We now educate and support Foster Carers in the same way, so that they too can take care of some of Australia’s most vulnerable children.

HOW WILL I HELP?

The Lighthouse Young Parent and Babies Program provides therapeutic care to enrich the safety, attachment, physical and emotional development for trauma-impacted young parents (under 25 years old) and their babies/children. The primary duties will involve a combination of case management, delivery of individualised and community therapeutic interventions and leadership of Therapeutic Carers supporting the home. You will ensure a predictable and safe environment is established through routines and a reflective culture is embedded to support the Therapeutic Carers to have empathy and curiosity for the young people’s experiences. Lighthouse Foundation utilises trauma-informed practice, attachment theory, and psychoanalytic principles of emotional development to create a holistic therapeutic treatment environment.

This role works within a multi- disciplinary team to support the young people in their care with the aim of keeping families together, and supporting families to transition into stable, long-term living arrangements post their time at Lighthouse. The role will be based within our Coburg North and Clayton Lighthouse homes, as well as the Youth Resource Hub.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL?

First and foremost, interpersonal skills are a must, with a level of maturity and understanding needed when working with those who use and support our services.

From a professional standpoint you will require:

  • Certificate IV in Child, Family and Youth Intervention (Residential and out of home care) or qualifications in a related discipline and completion of mandatory units of competency (in line with minimum qualification requirements for Residential Care Staff in Victoria)
  • Experience in a care-oriented role
  • Demonstrated capacity to understand and work with young people, and knowledge of the unique needs of young people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a collaborative team approach to service planning and program implementation
  • Commitment to professional and personal development in a professional context
  • Ability to plan, prioritise workloads and meet deadlines as required
  • Experience with conflict resolution and mediation
  • Ability to stay calm and rational in challenging situations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
