Test Engineer

Technology • Marrickville, New South Wales 2204, Australia • Full-time

Description

Summary:

We’re looking for a methodical and hands-on Test Engineer to join our engineering team and help establish an accelerated testing capability at PlasmaLeap. This role will play a key part in validating design decisions and ensuring our hardware performs reliably under real-world conditions. You’ll take ownership of designing and executing test programs that address mechanical, thermal, and environmental performance needs across the system. If you’re someone who enjoys building structured experiments, running hands-on evaluations, and turning data into actionable insights – we want to hear from you. This is an ideal role for an engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, hardware-first environment and wants to contribute directly to the development of next-generation industrial systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute structured test programs for both system-level prototypes and individual components, including test stand operations and real-world usage scenarios.
  • Conduct performance evaluations under mechanical, thermal, and environmental conditions, and assess material choices based on durability, functionality, and practicality.
  • Document failure modes, edge-case behaviors, and degradation mechanisms with clarity.
  • Collaborate with the design and prototyping team to ensure material choices align with fabrication and integration needs.
  • Maintain accurate records of material specifications, batch data, and supplier sources to support traceability and internal reviews.
  • Communicate results clearly and contribute to design decisions with evidence-based recommendations.
  • Follow safe work practices and contribute to maintaining a well-managed workspace aligned with WHS guidelines.

Required skills/qualifications:

  • A degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A track record of R&D experience in applied materials evaluation, preferably in a testing-heavy or product development context.
  • Strong skills in experimental design, critical analysis, and structured reporting.
  • The ability to manage test workflows independently while maintaining alignment with broader engineering goals.
  • A pragmatic and solutions-oriented mindset – capable of balancing technical performance with cost and implementation realities.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe, organised, and compliant working environment in line with WHS expectations.

Preferred Skills / Experience (not essential)

  • Familiarity with basic electrical, thermal, or mechanical property testing relevant to engineering materials.
  • Exposure to analytical material characterisation methods (e.g. hardness testing, surface analysis, thermal profiling).
  • Experience working in cross-functional product development teams.
  • Background in component selection and validation within R&D or pre-commercial settings.
