Geologist – Petroleum

Description

This technical role involves evaluating and interpreting subsurface geological data to guide investment decisions for Tri-Star. The responsibilities include planning and executing geological activities on various Tri-Star projects. A key requirement for this position is experience across multiple types of geological formations and commodities, encompassing both conventional and unconventional oil and gas plays.

Experience Required

  • Experience working with conventional and/or unconventional petroleum reservoirs, including Coal Seam Gas.
  • Working knowledge of geological software (Petrel or equivalent) and data analysis tools and subsurface workflows.
  • Familiar with the geology of the Australia’s east coast with knowledge of Bowen-Surat Basins and the Cooper Basin.
  • Knowledge of prospect volumetrics and risking in conventional and unconventional reservoirs.
  • Ability to work autonomously but not fear asking for help as required.
  • Be curious, organised and have excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to alternate technology, points of view and challenges.

Role and Responsibilities

Subsurface Evaluation

  • Geoscience Data Discovery – Use government databases, open file reports to locate data (well logs, core analysis, seismic, well completion reports) that are relevant to Tri-Star’s areas of interest.
  • Load, quality control and maintain data in Tri-Star’s databases.
  • Keep abreast of new developments, technologies, methods or best practices and incorporate into Tri-Stars workflows and operations where appropriate
  • Geoscience Data Interpretation – Integrate and interpret a variety of geological data to generate maps, sections and geological models at regional to prospect scale. This could include:
  1. Well log interpretation and petrophysics.
  2. Well correlations
  3. Core analysis
  4. Seismic interpretation
  • Develop technical proposals for exploration activities and work programs.
  • Manage contractors and consultants as required for studies, data processing etc.
  • Articulate geological hazards and uncertainties associated with work programs.
  • Regulatory reporting post activity and as required by legislation.

Project Execution

  • Work closely with the Engineering Team and other professionals to develop drilling plans and evaluation strategies to mitigate risks to ensure the success of exploration efforts.
  • Work with the Engineering and Subsurface Teams to develop operational decision trees.
  • Provide support to the Engineering Team during the execution of field activities
  • Monitor drilling operations maintaining proper communication with the engineering team and well site geologist
  • Use drilling data and well correlations to identify coring points and zones for testing.
  • Provide geological input on target selection, wellbore trajectory and geosteering operations where appropriate
  • Document operations in written reports and illustrate with cross sections, maps etc.
  • Evaluate current practices to identify improvement opportunities Company wide.
  • Support engineering team in authoring Well Completion Reports.
  • Ensure all newly acquired data is filed appropriately for new well, studies, seismic etc.

Business Development

  • Provide technical input into Tri-Star’s business cases in line with Tri-Star’s gated process.
  • Provide subsurface evaluations of potential acquisitions and farm-in opportunities
  • Ensure that the risk associated with each activity is well articulated in accordance with established methodologies.
