The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service based in Bunbury which provides a variety of health services to Aboriginal people in the South West, Great South, Upper Wheatbelt and Peel Regions of Western Australia. SWAMS delivers a wide range of services including: GP Clinics, Primary Health Care, Counselling, and Mental Health. SWAMS has a strong growth strategy through partnership opportunities and future community development.

SWAMS is dedicated to enhancing employment opportunities and outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This position is designated under Section 50 of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 (WA), and as such, only Aboriginal or Torres Strait people are eligible to apply.

We are currently seeking two Playgroup Leaders to work Monday and Thursday (either full days or school hours – you choose), under the guidance of the Maternal and Child Health Program Coordinator, will plan, deliver and evaluate the playgroups and related activities for clients.

The Playgroup Leader will work collaboratively with internal and external service providers to build community support for activities. The Playgroup Leader will foster playgroups which will reinforce activities and sessions which prepare children for school. The playgroups will aim to increase children’s school readiness and build on existing parenting skills to give children a good start in life.

About You

  • Demonstrated passion for working with children and families
  • Ability to take direction, determine priorities and manage workloads in order to meet agreed timelines and objectives.
  • Experience and skills in organising, delivering and providing education to clients and families on health care, and healthy lifestyle advice.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated time management and organisational skills.
  • Knowledge of health, social and emotional wellbeing needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Hold a current Working with Children Check or have the ability to obtain.

Desirable Criteria

  • Qualification in the area of education or equivalent experience
