About The Role

We are seeking a Financial Controller to lead the finance function at Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA). Reporting to the CEO, this role sits at the centre of the organisation, providing both strategic financial advice and hands-on leadership across day-to-day operations.

As the most senior finance professional, you will work closely with the CEO and Board to support long-term sustainability, while ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, compliance, and controls across the organisation.

This is a role for someone who can operate at both levels — advising at Board level while staying close to the detail.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic financial leadership

  • Lead long-term financial planning and annual budgeting aligned to MIA’s research and clinical priorities
  • Partner with the CEO and Board on financial performance, investment decisions, and risk
  • Oversee capital expenditure planning and evaluation
  • Work with senior leaders to strengthen financial accountability across the organisation

Governance, reporting and compliance

  • Take ownership of cash flow, budgets, expenses, and balance sheet reporting
  • Monitor charitable expenditure ratio and report on variances
  • Ensure compliance with ACNC requirements, including Annual Information Statement (AIS) lodgement
  • Maintain compliance with Australian accounting standards, NFP regulations, and tax obligations (GST, FBT, Payroll Tax)
  • Oversee payroll to ensure accuracy and compliance with relevant awards
  • Lead the external audit process and maintain strong internal controls

Operational leadership

  • Lead and develop a small finance team (Senior Accountant and Accounts Payable)
  • Oversee day-to-day finance operations including AP/AR and month-end processes
  • Provide timely financial insights and reporting to support decision-making
  • Drive improvements across systems, processes, and data integrity

About You

  • CA or CPA qualified with a degree in Accounting, Finance, or similar
  • 10+ years’ experience in senior finance roles, ideally as a Financial Controller or equivalent
  • Experience within a Not-for-Profit or medical research environment (Required)
  • Strong understanding of grant funding, acquittals, and NFP reporting requirements
  • Proven experience establishing or improving finance functions
  • Deep capability across FP&A, cash flow management, and statutory reporting
  • Comfortable operating at both strategic and operational levels
  • Strong leadership experience managing small, high-performing teams
  • Able to present financial information clearly to executive and Board stakeholders
