About the Organisation
Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service (DYHS) is a leading Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation delivering holistic, culturally safe primary health care and Social and Emotional Wellbeing services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across the Perth metropolitan area.
About the Role
Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified members of the Corporation to fill a Casual Member Director vacancy on the Board of Directors.
The appointment will be made by the Board in accordance with the DYHS Rule Book and will be subject to ratification by members at the next General Meeting of the Corporation. If ratified by members, the successful appointee will hold office until the close of the 2027 Annual General Meeting.
The Board plays a critical governance role in overseeing the strategic direction, financial sustainability, and cultural integrity of the organisation, ensuring that DYHS continues to deliver high-quality health and wellbeing services to Aboriginal communities across Perth.
Skills and Experience
The Board is seeking expressions of interest from members who can contribute strong governance oversight, sound judgement and strategic thinking. Experience in one or more of the following areas would be highly regarded:
- Aboriginal community leadership and advocacy
- Health services, primary health care or the Aboriginal health sector
- Finance, legal or regulatory matters relevant to organisational governance
- Governance, board or committee experience
- Policy development, strategy or organisational leadership
Members with Traditional Owner connections to Noongar Boodjar are encouraged to express their interest, although this is not a requirement.
Eligibility Requirements
In accordance with Rule 6.4 of the DYHS Rule Book, an individual is eligible for appointment as a Member Director if they meet the following requirements.
Per clause 6.4(a) of the DYHS Rule Book, a person is eligible for appointment as a Member Director if they:
- Are a member of the Corporation as at 16th March 2026.
- Have consented in writing to be appointed as a director in the form set out at Schedule 3 of the Rule Book.
- Have demonstrated knowledge and experience in areas such as health, finance, governance, law or another area relevant to the objectives of the Corporation.
- Complete suitable governance training, either prior to appointment or within six months following appointment.
Per clause 6.4(b) of the DYHS Rule Book, a person is not eligible to become a Director if they:
- Have been disqualified from managing corporations.
- Have been convicted of a criminal offence within the last 5 years or have at any time been sentenced to imprisonment for more than 12 months.
- Are an employee of the Corporation at the time of appointment, during appointment, or within two years prior to appointment.
Additional DYHS Rule Book eligibility restriction (6.4c)
An individual who served as a Director of the Corporation or a member of the Management Committee (when the organisation operated under the Associations Incorporation Act 2015 (WA)) at any time prior to 6 November 2020 is not eligible to be appointed as a Director until after the AGM for the financial year ending 30 June 2026.
Commitment
Directors are expected to attend regular Board meetings and contribute actively to the governance and strategic oversight of the organisation. Board meetings are generally held monthly, with occasional additional meetings or committee participation as required.
