Orbital Internet Group

Location:  Harrogate or Canterbury

Reports to:  Group Financial Controller

Salary:  £35,000 – £40,000, depending on experience

Contract:  Permanent, full-time

About us

Orbital Internet Group is a fast-growing, private equity-backed internet service provider and network operator. We build and run our own networks and deliver connectivity to businesses, consumers & holiday parks.

Our Parks business is the fastest-growing part of the group and, following the acquisition of LPIS Ltd, we are one of the largest dedicated connectivity providers to the UK holiday park market serving hundreds of parks and marinas and tens of thousands of park owners. LPIS operates from Harrogate and sits as part of the group with head office in Kent, Canterbury.

We have grown quickly, both organically and through acquisition. Joining now means joining a finance function that is scaling up alongside the business, with real scope to shape how we do things.

The role

Reporting to the Group Financial Controller, the Management Accountant will work as part of a team to deliver monthly management accounts and play a part in the group’s consolidated reporting.

This is a broad, hands-on role in a multi-entity group. As well as producing the numbers, you will be expected to explain them, challenge them and improve the processes that generate them. It suits someone part-way through their qualification who wants genuine end-to-end exposure in management accounts, consolidation, VAT, audit, cash flow, controls and systems rather than a narrow seat in a large finance team.

Key responsibilities

Month-end and management reporting

  • Produce monthly management accounts for allocated group entities. Preparing P&L, balance sheet and supporting schedules to an agreed close timetable.
  • Prepare month-end processes: journals, accruals, prepayments, deferred and accrued income, fixed assets and depreciation.
  • Complete balance sheet reconciliations to a high standard, with clear supporting evidence and prompt resolution of ageing items.
  • Prepare variance analysis against budget, forecast and prior year, with commentary that explains the drivers.
  • Support production of the group consolidation and the monthly board and investor reporting pack.

Business partnering

  • Partner with operational and commercial colleagues to help them understand and manage their cost base and performance.
  • Support the annual budget and periodic reforecasts.
  • Produce ad hoc financial reporting and analysis to support commercial decisions.

Transactional, control and compliance

  • Prepare and submit VAT returns.
  • Complete bank reconciliations and reconcile and settle intercompany balances across the group.
  • Ensure stock counts are carried out, reconciled back to the ledger, and variances investigated and explained.
  • Support the purchase ledger and sales ledger functions, acting as an escalation point and reviewer.
  • Assist in the production of cash flow forecasting and in lender and covenant reporting.
  • Support the annual audit by preparing schedules, evidencing balances and responding to auditor queries.
  • Review and continuously improve internal financial controls and processes, documenting them as you go.

Systems and integration

  • Work in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, our group ERP, and help us get more out of it.
  • Play an active part in integrating acquired businesses onto group systems, processes and reporting standards.

Skills and experience

Essential

  • Part-qualified ACA, ACCA or CIMA.
  • Demonstrable experience preparing management accounts.
  • Strong Excel, comfortable with lookups, pivot tables and large data sets.

  • Well organised and deadline-driven, comfortable in a fast-moving SME where priorities can shift.
  • Accurate, curious and willing to investigate anything that does not look right.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in an ISP, telecoms, utility or other infrastructure or asset-heavy business.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
  • Experience of a multi-entity group consolidation, intercompany and multiple ledgers.
  • Exposure to a private equity-backed and/or acquisitive business.
  • Understanding of revenue recognition in subscription and recurring-revenue models.
