Crane Operator

The Role

As a Crane Operator, you will be responsible for planning, preparing and carrying out lifting operations both within our shipyards and at customer locations. You will support vessel repair and maintenance projects, fabrication and mechanical works, material handling activities, and contract lifting operations.

Working closely with Operations Managers, Supervisors, Tradespeople and Clients, you will ensure all lifting activities are completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with company procedures and industry regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Operating cranes safely and efficiently on-site and off-site.
  • Assisting with the preparation and completion of lift plans.
  • Participating in pre-lift toolbox talks and safety briefings.
  • Conducting daily crane inspections and recording checks.
  • Carrying out routine crane maintenance and reporting defects.
  • Inspecting lifting equipment, shackles, chains, hooks and slings before use.
  • Ensuring statutory inspections and certifications remain current and reporting requirements to the QHSE team.
  • Working in accordance with permit-to-work systems and risk assessments.
  • Assisting in the development of lift plans, risk assessments and method statements.
  • Maintaining high standards of housekeeping within work areas.
  • Working effectively alongside colleagues, contractors and specialist trades.
  • Supporting the development and mentoring of apprentices.
  • Promoting excellent customer service and maintaining positive client relationships.
  • Participating in safety meetings, toolbox talks and company training programmes.
  • Supporting the implementation and maintenance of ISO management systems.
  • Following and promoting Dales Marine’s Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality standards at all times.

What We’re Looking For

Essential:

  • Valid crane operator certification from a recognised certification body.
  • Experience in a crane operating role within marine, shipbuilding, construction, engineering, heavy industry or a similar environment.
  • Strong understanding of lifting operations and associated legislation.
  • Ability to read and work to lift plans, risk assessments and method statements.
  • Commitment to maintaining the highest health and safety standards.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Ability to work flexibly, including overtime and weekends when required.

Desirable:

  • Experience working within ship repair, marine engineering or heavy engineering environments.
  • Appointed Person, Slinger/Signaller or other lifting qualifications.
  • Experience supporting apprentices and trainee development.

Working Environment

The role combines operating from the crane cab with hands-on preparation, setup and inspection activities outdoors. Work may be carried out in dry docks, shipyards, quaysides and customer locations, often in varying weather conditions.

Appropriate PPE will be provided and must be worn when required, including safety footwear, hard hats, coveralls, gloves and eye protection.
