Description

We’re looking for a knowledgeable and passionate Plant Area Assistant to join our team at Dean’s York Garden Centre.

This role is ideal for someone who has a genuine understanding of plants, and can confidently care for them while sharing advice with customers. If you’re hands-on, take pride in high standards, and enjoy helping others succeed with their plants, we’d love to hear from you.

In this role, you’ll be working the following hours: Week 1:

Tuesday 1pm-7:30pm, Wednesday 9am-5pm, Thursday 9am-5pm, Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 9am-5pm, Sunday 9am-4:30pm = 43 hours total

Week 2:

Tuesday 9am-5pm, Wednesday 9am-5pm, Thursday 9am-5pm, Friday 9am-5pm = 30 hours total

Average hours per week = 36.5

What you’ll be doing:

  • Caring for a wide range of plants across the department, ensuring they are healthy and well presented
  • Watering, feeding, pruning, and identifying any signs of pests or disease
  • Maintaining high standards of plant care and visual merchandising
  • Creating attractive and inspiring displays for customers
  • Offering confident, knowledgeable advice on plant care, planting, and seasonal products
  • Supporting with stock replenishment, deliveries, and general department upkeep

What we’re looking for:

  • Strong plant knowledge is essential – you’re confident in plant care, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • A genuine passion for horticulture and working with plants
  • Confidence in speaking with customers and giving tailored advice
  • A proactive, hands-on approach with great attention to detail
  • A team player who is flexible and willing to support where needed
  • Previous horticultural or plant area experience is highly desirable
