About the Role

The Assistant Accountant is a key hands-on role supporting the day-to-day financial operations of Urban Rest’s Australia and New Zealand entities. You will own core transactional processing, payroll, reconciliations, and compliance activities. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated accountant looking to grow their skills in a fast-scaling, multi-jurisdiction business.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Accounting & Processing Support

  • Partner closely with the Senior Financial Accountant to manage day-to-day transactional accounting functions across ANZ entities.
  • Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations and maintain a clean general ledger.
  • Investigate and resolve accounting variances in a timely manner.
  • Provide ad-hoc financial analysis and support to the wider finance team.

Payroll & Transaction Management

  • Take full ownership of the fortnightly payroll process end-to-end.
  • Manage accounts payable/receivable workflows and partner payment cycles.
  • Work with offshore support teams to ensure accurate AP/AR processing.

Process Improvement & AI Integration

  • Identify and implement opportunities to automate manual processes.
  • Champion the use of AI tools (automated invoice processing, smart reconciliations, Excel add-ins, etc.).
  • Document improved processes and controls.

Audit Prep & Compliance Assistance

  • Prepare audit schedules, workpapers, and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with BAS, payroll tax, and workers’ compensation returns.

What We Look For

Must have:

  • A positive, high-energy, self-starting team player who genuinely enjoys solving process and financial issues.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong time management and attention to detail, with a proven ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Degree in Accounting, Finance or a related discipline. Working towards CA/CPA is highly regarded.

Nice to have:

  • Prior hands-on exposure to cloud accounting platforms, specifically Xero accounting software ecosystem.
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel analytical skills (lookups, pivot tables, clear numerical reporting structures).
  • Background or prior industry experience in hospitality, short-term accommodation, or multi-entity property businesses will be highly regarded.
