Route Setting Manager
The Role 😊
The Route Setting Manager is responsible for maintaining the Castle Climbing Centre’s high standard of route setting. As a Route Setting Manager, you will support the team by planning and publishing the centre’s route setting schedule and managing and training the route setting and stripping teams. You will be responsible for the departmental budgeting and ordering, inspecting and upkeeping the department’s PPE. You will also plan departmental and centre development, authoring and implementing departmental health and safety policies; and responding to customer queries and feedback.

We’re looking for an enthusiastic team member to join us 37.5 hours a week, including admin hours.
This is a full-time permanent role with a starting salary of £38k (depending on experience).
Main Duties & Responsibilities ✨
Managing the Team
- On a regular basis, joining the team as a setter on both rope and boulder sets.
- Creating, publishing and updating the Castle’s annual route setting schedule.
- Managing the rota, timesheets, and leave requests of the setting and stripping teams via Employment Hero.
- Booking freelance setters where appropriate, and managing communication on setting areas, invoicing, and any specific expectations or relevant information ahead of each set.
- Ensuring that all first-time freelance setters are inducted on the Castle’s setting policies, and that all setters are updated whenever policy changes are made.
- Conducting and recording regular 1-to-1 sessions with each member of the in-house setting and stripping teams.
- Conducting and recording annual performance appraisals for the setting and stripping teams.
- Managing the setting team’s annual personal equipment allowance.
- Facilitating the training of cross-departmental staff who take on stripping and washing shifts as part of the Castle’s Voluntary Additional Hours scheme.
- Facilitating rope safety and rescue training and refresher sessions for the setting and stripping teams.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Recording and filing daily safety ‘check sheets’ after sets.
- Providing monthly budget, personnel, and project reports to the senior leadership team.
- Publishing ‘route boards’ at the end of each rope setting day.
- Publishing customer vote results for lead and auto belay sets.
- Regularly maintaining, stock checking, and organising of the hold stores.
- Conducting regular appraisals of holds and volumes to either be retired or retextured.
- Facilitating the donation of retired holds to local charities.
- Coordinating the retexture of existing holds, and/or the purchase of new holds.
- Processing freelance setter and equipment supplier invoices.
- Producing annual budget plans and recording monthly departmental spending.
Cross Departmental Responsibilities
- Working alongside the events and marketing department to provide route setting for specific workshops, events, and competitions held at the Castle.
- Working alongside the instructing department to ensure appropriate setting is being provided for courses, coaching, and the Castle Squad.
- Working with Duty Managers and/or external contractors to ensure that PPE is recorded, maintained, and accessible for regular inspections, and to ensure that climbing areas and wall structures and surfaces are safe, fit for purpose and meet relevant safety standards.
- Participating in bi-weekly meetings with the wider management team.
- Collaborating with the Operations Director and senior management to help plan and implement the development of the Castle’s climbing areas.
